Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Tennis team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, scoring an impressive 8-1 victory over Vaughn. The Knights posted wins in all six singles matches and took two of the three doubles contests against the Warriors.
The Mount got off to a good start on Saturday, taking the first and third doubles matches to open a 2-1 lead. The top pair of
Chris McGorty (Bellmore, N.Y.) and
Jaden Tiriolo (Cheshire, Conn.) eased to an 8-0 victory, while the third doubles pair of
Joe Ryan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
David Gonzalez (Middletown, N.Y.) battled to an 8-6 victory.
In the singles matches, Mount Saint Mary dropped just 11 games over the six matches. Tiriolo at the third flight and Ryan at fifth singles posted 6-0, 6-0 victories for the Knights, while McGorty scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top position.
Shane Terry (Southampton, N.Y.) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles,
Matt Gallo (Clark, N.Y.) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth position and Gonzalez posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth single for the Knights.
With his win on Saturday, Tiriolo moved his singles record to a perfect 4-0 on the season, with Terry improving to 3-1 for the Mount. McGorty, Ryan and Gonzalez all evened their records at 2-2 in the victory.
At 3-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary begins a stretch of three matches in three days on Monday when it hosts Western Connecticut. Match time with the Colonials is set for 7:00 p.m.
