Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returns home for the first time in three weeks as it plays host to United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. The twinbill is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at Dutchess Stadium.
At A Glance: The Knights returned to the win column on Tuesday as it swept St. Joseph's-Brooklyn by scores of 13-1 (seven innings) and 4-1 to improve to 8-5 (2-2 Skyline).
Three players are hitting above .400 to start the season as
John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) leads in batting average at .450, has a team-high four doubles, and is second on the team in on-base percentage at .500. and runs batted in with eight.
Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) is hitting .438 on the season while Mirra is third in average at .417 while leading in on-base percentage at .523 and he is 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts.
Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is the leader in runs batted in with nine so far this season.
Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) holds the team lead in innings pitched with 17.1 while holding a team best 0.52 ERA.
Christian Spano has 16.1 innings pitched with while holding a 7.71 earned run average while Santana has logged 15.0 innings and a 4.20 ERA.
Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) has thrown 14 and two-thirds while boasting a 4.91 earned run average.
The Knights hold a .921 fielding percentage and a 3.64 team ERA. The Mount holds a team batting average of .269 batting average early this season and holds a .251 batting average against. As a team, the Knights are 37-41 in stolen base attempts.
Last Time Out: In game one against the Bears, the Mount cruised to a 13-1 victory in a run-rule shortened seven inning contest. S. Rizzo threw a complete game for the Knights, allowing seven hits over seven innings and allowed one unearned run. He lowered his ERA to a team best 0.52.
The Knights banged out 17 hits in the contest as N. Rizzo and Santana both had three hits and three runs batted in for the Knights. Mirra finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and
Anthony Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with four runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Knights staged a four run comeback in its final at-bat. To lead off the seventh inning, Mirra and
Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) each singled to give the Knights a runner in scoring position. After two consecutive outs,
Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases for Goodwin. He laced a double down the left field line to plate three runs and give the Knights its first lead of the contest. Santana followed it up with an infield single to give the Mount an additional insurance run heading into the final half inning.
Santana picked up his second win of the season, allowing six hits over seven innings and allowed one unearned run while striking out nine. Six different players had a hit for the Knights and Stewart drew three walks. Goodwin and Santana combined for four RBI's in the contest as Goodwin pushed his team lead in runs batted in to nine.
A Look At USMMA: The Mariners sit at 10-7 (2-2 Skyline) on the season after a 14-1 win over John Jay on Wednesday.
Jesse Reinbold is the leading hitter for USMMA as he is hitting .415 on the season and is second in runs batted in with 14. Vincenzo Alteri is hitting .408 with a team-high 18 RBI's, five doubles and three triples.
John Kelly Jr. is leading the Mariners in innings pitched with 24.1 and holds a 1.85 earned run average.
