Baseball Takes On St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

Knights look for first win of conference play

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returns to action on Tuesday when it hits the road to take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. The doubleheader will take place at St. Joseph's-L.I. and is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.

At A Glance: The Knights dropped to 6-5 overall after being swept by Maritime, 5-1 and 16-3, on Monday evening.  

Four players are hitting above .390 to start the season as John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) leads in batting average at .438, has a team-high four doubles and is second on the team in on-base percentage at .500.

Sophomore Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) and Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) are each hitting .400 on the season while Mirra leads in on-base percentage at .514 and he is 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts. Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Falls, N.Y.) is second in extra base hits with three doubles on the year while hitting .391 this season. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is the leader in runs batted in with six so far this season.

Christian Spano leads the Mount in innings pitched with 16.1 while holding a 7.71 earned run average. Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) has thrown 14 and two-thirds while boasting a 4.91 earned run average. Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) has 10.1 innings pitched while holding a 0.98 ERA.

The Knights hold a .921 fielding percentage and a 4.24 team ERA. The Mount holds a team batting average of .248 batting average early this season and holds a .252 batting average against.

Last Time Out: In game one against Maritime, the Knights dropped a 5-1 contest in a nine inning game. Spano took the loss as he threw six innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned) and three strikeouts. Anthony Collura (Franklin Square, N.Y.) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Knights.

Santana was 3-for-4 in game one for the Knights, including the lone RBI, and added two doubles.

In the nightcap, Maritime pounded out 11 hits to defeat the Mount 16-3 in the seven inning contest. Barbieri took the loss for the Knights as he only threw one inning, allowing eight runs on seven hits. Six different pitchers appeared for the Mount in the contest.

Michael Doxey (Highland, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with a double, Rizzo added a double and Mirra had two runs batted in.

A Look At St. Joseph's-Brooklyn: The Bears are 9-3-1 (2-0 Skyline) on the season after splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Centenary on Friday afternoon.

Michael Ryan leads in batting average at .419 in 10 games played while Adam Schwartz and Louis Lombardi are each hitting .400 to begin the season. Anthony Palermo leads in runs batted in with 18 and William DeLuca has three home runs on the year. Schwartz leads in stolen bases with 12.

Andrew Watters leads the Bears in innings pitched with 21.0, boasts a 3.00 earned run average and is 4-0 on the season in five appearances. C.J. Bunnicelli has logged 17.0 innings with a 5.82 ERA and J.J. McLaughlin has 10 innings pitched with a 4.50 ERA.

As a team, the Bears hold a 5.81 earned run average and .958 fielding percentage. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn has a team batting average of .288 while they hold a batting average against of .256.

What's Next: Mount Saint Mary returns to action for its Skyline Conference home opener against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium.
