Baseball Set For Skyline Conference Opener With Maritime

Knights return to action following a 3-1 Florida trip

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team begins Skyline Conference play on the road against Maritime on Monday afternoon. The doubleheader in Throggs Neck is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

At A Glance: The Knights improved to 6-3 on the season following winning three out of four games during its trip to Port Charlotte, Fla.

Four players are hitting above .390 to start the season as sophomore Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) leads the Mount in average, hitting .440 on the season. Mirra is also 6-for-7 this season in stolen base attempts while leading in on-base percentage at .548.

John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) is second in average at .423 while Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) is hitting .421. Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Falls, N.Y.) leads in extra base hits with three doubles on the year while hitting .391 this season. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is the leader in runs batted in with six so far this season.

Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) leads in innings pitched with 13 and two-thirds while boasting a 1.32 earned run average. Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) each have 10.1 innings pitched while Rizzo holds a 0.98 ERA.

The Knights hold a .933 fielding percentage and a 3.80 team ERA. The Mount improved its batting average to a team .258 batting average early this season and holds a .241 batting average against.

Last Time Out: In game one against SUNY Cobleskill, the Knights defeated the Fighting Tigers 7-3 in a seven inning contest. Sal Rizzo earned the win, going five innings and allowing five hits, zero earned runs and struck out three. Alexander Maher (Mineola, N.Y.) entered in relief for the Knights in bottom of the sixth as he struck out three in two hitless innings of work.

Santana added two runs scored and a run batted in to his four hit game as Mirra finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Marzigliano was 1-for-2 with two RBI's and Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) finished 1-for-1 with three hit by pitches.

In the nightcap, the Mount held off SUNY Cobleskill to complete the sweep with a 5-2 victory. Santana picked up the win, throwing five innings and allowing three hits, one run (zero earned) and struck out seven. Senior Nick Zestanakis (Bayside, N.Y.) picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh to give the Knights its fourth win in its last five games.

Eight different Knights hitters finished with a base hit and five different players had a run scored while Mirra led the way finishing the nightcap 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.

A Look At Maritime: The Privateers are off to a 9-7 start this season after sweeping non-conference foe John Jay on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 6-2 and 3-0.

Joe Scerra holds the leading batting average at .333 while also having the team-high on base percentage at .478. Phil Russo is hitting .315 on the season and holds the team lead in runs batted in with 14, while Jake Vera is hitting .311 with six doubles. Travis Zurita leads the team in home runs with two, has five doubles and is second in RBI's with 12.

Ryan Ragone leads in innings pitched with 19.0, holding a 4.26 earned run average. Niko Concha has 18.0 innings pitched to go with a 3.50 ERA. Travis Bruinsma has logged 11.2 innings and has a 3.86 ERA while Alex Poliwoda has tossed 10.0 innings and holds a 9.00 ERA.

The team holds a 4.43 ERA along with a .963 fielding percentage on the season. The Privateers hold a .247 batting average against while opponents hold a 5.34 ERA and a .265 batting average against. Maritime has 51 stolen bases on 58 attempts in 16 games this season.

What's Next: Mount Saint Mary returns to action for its Skyline Conference home opener against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium.
