Knights Fall Twice In Skyline Conference Opener

Santana finishes with three hits in game one

Bronx, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team suffered two losses in its Skyline Conference opener on the road against Maritime on Monday evening. The Knights dropped a 5-1 contest in game one and suffered a 16-3 loss in the nightcap.

Maritime 5 – Mount Saint Mary 1

The Privateers got on top first and never looked back. Maritime put up four runs in the first inning as the Privateers had five hits in the inning including a double from Eric Wenig that drove in a run. Travis Zurita, Shane Sullivan and Adam Mosca all drove in a run in the first as well.

Wenig drove in his second run of the game when he singled to right to drive in Ryan Rockhill in the bottom of the second.

The Mount loaded the bases in the top of the fourth following a Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) hit by pitch but a 6-4-3 double play groundout ended the threat for the Knights.

The Knights finally got on the board in the top of sixth after John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line to score Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) but the Mount failed to score after the sixth inning in the defeat.

Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) took the loss as he threw six innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned) and three strikeouts. Anthony Collura (Franklin Square, N.Y.) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Knights.

A.J. Ammirati earned the win for the Privateers as he finished with seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. Alex Poliwoda picked up the save in relief for Maritime as he threw two scoreless innings.

Wenig led the way for Maritime, finishing 2-for-3 on the day with two runs batted in. Mosca and Nick McTighe also finished 2-for-4 on the day for the Privateers.

Santana was 3-for-4 in game one for the Knights, including the lone RBI, and added two doubles.

Maritime 16 – Mount Saint Mary 3 (7 innings)

The Knights got on the board first as Rizzo lead off the game with a double to left center field. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) followed with a bunt single and Santana drove in Rizzo with a RBI groundout. Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) came through with a two out two RBI single to give the Knights a 3-0 advantage after the top half of the first.

The Privateers responded with eight runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Maritime banged out seven hits as Zurita, Wenig, Sullivan, McTighe, Rockhill and Matt Eng all had RBI hits in the inning.

Maritime scored two more runs in the second as an error with the bases loaded plated two runs before the Privateers added another five runs in the third on RBI's from Mosca, Rockhill and Eng. The Privateers added an additional run on a sacrifice fly by Zurita in the fifth.

Barbieri took the loss for the Knights as he only threw one inning, allowing eight runs on seven hits. Six different pitchers appeared for the Mount in the contest.

Travis Bunshima picked up the win for Maritime as he finished with six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Rockhill finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's as McTighe, Zurita and Eng each had two runs batted in.

Michael Doxey (Highland, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with a double, Rizzo added a double and Mirra had two runs batted in.

Mount Saint Mary falls to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the Skyline. The Knights return to action tomorrow as they travel to take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on the campus of St. Joseph's-L.I. First pitch of the doubleheader in Patchogue is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
