Holland’s Game Winner Sends Mount Saint Mary Past Manhattanville In Double Overtime

Junior scored twice, Spagnuolo won 19 face-offs

Newburgh, N.Y. – Junior Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored two goals, including the game winner in double overtime and classmate Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) won 19 face-offs as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team outlasted Manhattanville on Wednesday night 10-9 in two overtimes.
 
The visitors got off to a quick start on Wednesday, scoring the first four goals of the game to open a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of action. Holland got the Mount on the board with a man-up tally early in the second and started a string of three straight man-up goals to get the Knights to within 6-3 at the intermission.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outshot before halftime 22-13, but controlled face-offs 8-3 and held the halftime advantage in groundballs 19-12.
 
The Mount came out of the break and outscored the Valiants 3-1 in the third to get to within 7-6 heading into the final 15 minutes. Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) finished off a strong third period for the Mount with a goal and a pair of assists.
 
The Knights would tie the game twice in the fourth period before taking its first lead of regulation on Kearns' seventh of the season that pushed the Mount in front 9-8 with 5:39 left in regulation time. T.J. Caccavo answered for the Valiants with 2:30 left in the fourth to send the two teams to overtime.
 
After a scoreless first extra frame in which the Mount was shorthanded on two occasions, Holland snapped the Mount's two game skid with his team leading 12th goal of the season with just nine seconds left in the second overtime stanza. He finished off a feed from Kearns to get the Mount back into the win column.
 
Holland moved his team lead in goals to 12 with his scoring output on Wednesday, with Kearns finishing off a huge game with two goals and three helpers. Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, N.J.) also scored twice for the Knights in the win.
 
Spagnuolo had his best game of the season at the face-off 'x' on Wednesday, going 19-for-23 with a game-high 11 groundballs. Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) led the Mount with three caused turnovers in the game to go along with four groundballs.
 
Manhattanville was led by two goals and an assist from Will Duval with Caccavo and Gianni Ciffano adding a pair of goals apiece. Sam Hahn collected five groundballs for the visitors with Conor Keough good for two caused turnovers and four groundballs.
 
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season with a strong 14 save performance. He stopped a pair of shots in the final 1:45 of the second overtime to keep the game tied. He added a caused turnover and three groundballs to the win. Jason Fezza also made 14 saves in the tilt for the Valiants and closed the night with six groundballs.
 
Manhattanville finished the night with a 47-36 advantage in overall shots, while the Knights held the edge in shots on goal 24-23. Groundballs went to the Knights 45-36 and the Mount dominated face-offs 19-4. Both teams scored three times with the man advantage, with the Mount going a perfect 3-for-3 in man-up opportunities.
 
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 3-4 overall on the season. The Knights will round out a four game home stand on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Marywood. Face-off with the Pacers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
