Gettysburg, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team returns to action in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Gettysburg College. The Knights will take on Christopher Newport with a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 with a tip-off time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Tickets: For Saturday night's contest, admission for adults will be $7. Students from participating institutions, children 3-18 and senior citizens will be $4. Children under the age of 2 will NOT be charged admission.
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary completed the regular season at 22-5 overall and was perfect in regular season Skyline Conference play at 18-0. The Knights won 14 straight contests before being tripped up in the Skyline Conference Championship game against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Senior
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) leads the Knights in scoring with 12.4 points per game and is in the midst of a strong all-around campaign with 8.8 rebounds and 39 blocks on the season while shooting 49-percent from the floor and became the first ever player with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Cleare finishes her decorated Knights career voted as Skyline Conference Co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Second Team as a sophomore and junior and Player of the Year and First Team as a senior.
Sophomore
Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) is leads the team in assist average with 3.1 per contest while scoring 10.3 points per night. Smith is a 45.9-percent shooter for the Knights from the floor and is 35.1-percent from three.
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) is tied for the lead in rebounding average with 8.8 on the season and she is good for nearly 10 points per outing and is second in blocked shots with 13. Freshman
Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) is good for 8.3 points per game and is second on the team in assists with 67, while freshman
Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) leads the team in steals with 39.
Preseason Notes: After winning the regular season crown in 2017-18 and dropping the Skyline Conference final to Old Westbury, the Knights were picked second in the preseason poll. The Knights posted an 18-0 record in conference play in 2018-19, beating the Merchant Marine by two games.
All-Skyline Conference Honors: Cleare was tabbed Skyline Conference Player of the Year as well as receiving first team accolades for her senior campaign. Smith earned Skyline Conference second team honors in her sophomore season.
Defense, Defense, Defense: The Mount ranks second in the Skyline Conference in scoring defense with 49.1 per contest. Nationally, the Knights rank fourth in field goal percentage defense, tied for fifth in defensive rebounds per game (31) and tied for 14
th in scoring defense.
Balanced Scoring: The Knights boast seven different players that are averaging five or more points per game on the season.
NCAA Tournament History: Mount Saint Mary has made its 14th appearance in the national tournament in program history and its first since advancing to the second round in 2011-12. The Knights are looking for their first trip to the Sweet 16 in program history.
Last Time Out: The Mount took down Westfield State in thrilling fashion 85-80 as freshman
Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) buried a corner three with 19 seconds remaining to put the Knights on top for good. The win was the Knights first NCAA tournament victory since 2012.
Desrats tied her career-high with 19 points on the night along with five rebounds and three assists. Keenan and Cleare both finished with double-doubles as Cleare added 13 points and 13 rebounds and Keenan had 14 points and 11 boards. Limonta chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds while Smith and
Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.) each had a team-high four assists.
The Mount finished the night shooting 49.3-percent as a team and finished 7-for-13 from deep. The Knights held the Owls to 30.6-percent for the game and 18-for-61 from three as Westfield State set the championship record for the most three-pointers in a game.
The Knights outscored Westfield State 36-12 in points in the paint and also beat them in fast break points 12-6. The Owls outscored the Knights in points off turnovers 23-6 while the Mount had the advantage in second chance points at 23-13. Mount Saint Mary outrebounded Westfield State 60-38 and grabbed 18 offensive caroms.
Scouting the Captains: Christopher Newport comes into the contest at 24-5 overall and 11-3 in the Capital Athletic Conference. They defeated Southern Virginia in the conference championship to earn the automatic bid. They defeated host Gettysburg 82-78 in the first round last night and are in the midst of a 10 game winning streak.
The Captains are led by All-CAC First team honorees Kiana Kirkland and Jessica Daguilh. Kirkland leads the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game and is third in steals with 56. Daguilh adds 10.6 points per contest and leads in rebounding with 7.0 per outing.
Sondra Fan chips in 10.7 points per game and is second in assists with 63. Jessica Foster leads in assists with 64 and adds 9.5 points per contest. Natalie Terwilliger is second in rebounding average with 5.8 per night.
The Captains average 77.2 points a game, shooting 41.4-percent as a team and 34.8-percent from three. They limit teams to 59.2 points per game while holding teams to 36.5-percent and 28.8-percent from the three-point line. Christopher Newport is averaging 15.4 steals per game and force eight more turnovers than they commit.
