Knights Falter Against Wisconsin-Superior, Springfield

Lang combines for six hits, four runs on Tuesday

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team continued play at the 2019 Spring Games on Tuesday, suffering a 9-2 loss to Wisconsin-Superior and a heartbreaking 7-6 decision to Springfield to close out the day. Junior Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) had a big day for the Mount, combining for six hits and four runs scored over the two games.

The Mount got off to a good start in the opener, plating the game's first run after stringing together a pair of hits in the top of the first. Lang started the rally with a two-out double and was later chased home on a RBI single from Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) to give the Knights and early 1-0 lead.
 
Superior came right back in the home half of the first with the tying run on an Ashley Taipale home run and opened up a 5-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth with a four run frame. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of three hits and a pair of Mount Saint Mary miscues to take the lead for good in the game. Alayna Tulip and Amber Yoch produced run scoring base hits in the big inning.
 
The Knights got a run back in the fifth, but saw Superior plate four more runs in the sixth to pull away for the victory. Lang again started things with a two-out double and scored her second run of the game on O'Neill's second run scoring safety of the contest.
 
In the sixth, the Yellow Jackets scored four times on just two base hits. Gabby Gidley ripped a two-run double in the inning before Bailey Armstrong closed out the scoring in the game with a two-run single.
 
Mount Saint Mary outhit Superior 10-8 in the game with O'Neill going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Lang finished up Tuesday's opener with two doubles and two runs scored. Armstrong led the Yellow Jacket attack with a pair of hits and two RBI in the contest.
 
O'Neill fell to 0-2 in the circle against Superior, allowing just one earned run in 3.1 innings while striking out one. Damara Theis picked up the complete game win for the Yellow Jackets, allowing 10 hits and fanning five Knights.
 
Springfield 7 – Mount Saint Mary 6
The Knights raced out to a 6-2 lead against the Pride through two innings, but saw Springfield answer with five runs over its final four at-bats to steal the victory.
 
After Jen Slane scored for the Pride in the top of the first, the Mount came back with a pair of runs in their first at-bat to take their first lead of the game. Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) walked to start the rally and after a Lang base hit, O'Neill and Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) followed with run scoring safeties to push the Knights in front.
 
The Mount's advantage grew to four runs in the second inning with four more tallies on the strength of three hits. Lang chased home Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) and Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) with a two-out single and later scored on an O'Neill double to right for the early 6-2 lead.
 
Springfield got a run back in the both the fourth and fifth innings to pull to within 6-4 and plated three runs in the sixth to sneak in front by the final 7-6 advantage. Alexyss Conley delivered a two-run single to knot the score at 6-6 and Meghan Sastram delivered the deciding tally with a run scoring groundout to push the Pride in front for good.
 
Lang closed out a big day by going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI with O'Neill finishing up 2-for-4 with a run scored and a trio of RBI as hits in the game were even at 11. Almodovar and McCann each finished the game with a hit and a run scored for the Knights.
 
Shelby Allen and Ava Fernandez each finished with two hits for the Pride with Conley going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
 
O'Neill took a no decision against Springfield after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, Del.) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Gillian Kane earned the win after fanning six Knights for the Pride.
 
At 0-8 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary closes out play in Florida on Wednesday with tilts against Bethany (9:30 a.m.) and Stevenson (11:45 a.m.).
