Clermont, Fla. - The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team picked up its first win of the season against Bethany 7-6 in a thrilling eight inning contest in the first game of the day before dropping a 6-0 game to Stevenson to conclude the Florida trip. Freshman
MacKenzie Hymes (Middletown, Del.) threw seven innings in relief, allowing only one run to pick up the victory, while
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) drove in three runs in the victory.
Mount Saint Mary 7 - Bethany 6 (8 inn.)
Bethany scored the first six runs of the contest in the second inning after a double and four straight walks plated the first two runs of the game. A double, fielder's choice, a groundout and an error scored the final four runs of the inning.
The Knights scored the first run of the game on a bases loaded walk by
Alyssa Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second. An RBI groundout by Hernandez cut the lead to four in the fourth as Bethany was scoreless for the rest of the game.
The Mount fought their way back in the bottom of the sixth as
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.), Hernandez and
Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) singled with one out in the inning. O'Neill laced a double that drove in all three to cut the lead to one. Hymes then came to the plate and singled to right to tie the game at six to score the pinch runner
Talia Dongvort (Shirley, N.Y.).
Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning, forcing the game to the international tiebreaker in the eighth. The Knights kept Bethany off the board in the top of the inning before
Erin McCann (East Haven, Conn.) singled to plate
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) to win its first game of the season.
Hymes finished the game with seven innings on two hits and one unearned run to pick up the win to go with a 3-for-4 day at the dish. Lang finished 3-for-5 in the game with a run scored and O'Neill was 2-for-3, including her three RBI's.
Kayla Dinsmore was 2-for-3 on the day to lead Bethany and drove in two runs while Erica Amoroso took the loss in relief in the circle.
Stevenson 6 - Mount Saint Mary 0
The Knights were shutout in game two as Bethany held the Mount to two hits in the contest. Almodovar and Hymes were the lone two to pick up a base hit for Mount Saint Mary.
Stevenson picked up their runs in two different innings as the Mustangs scored its first two runs in the third inning on a passed ball and a RBI single by Morghan Fulton.Â
The next three runs were put on the board in the fifth as a sac fly, two RBI double and a RBI groundout brought in the final six runs for the Mustangs.Â
Hymes took the loss, throwing a complete game while allowing 10 hits on six runs. Haley Monahan picked up the victory for Stevenson, throwing a complete game two-hitter.
Fulton and Sierra Stark finished with two hits apiece while Stark had a team-high two runs batted in. Haley Lennon led the Mustangs in runs scored with two in the contest.
At 1-9 overall, the Knights return to New York to begin Skyline Conference action. The Mount travels to Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday for a 11:30 a.m. doubleheader before traveling to Fordham University to take on Yeshiva for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday evening.
