Danbury, Conn. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team took to the road for the first time on Tuesday and suffered a 12-8 non-conference loss at Western Connecticut. Sophomores
Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, N.J.) and
Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) led the scoring attack with three points for the Knights.
Western Connecticut got off to a quick start on Tuesday, scoring three times in the opening six-and-a-half minutes, before Kearns got the Mount on the board at the 7:11 mark of the opening period. The Colonials went on to score three of the final four goals of the opening stanza, with the Mount's second goal coming with the man advantage off the stick of Bahmer with 41 seconds left in the frame.
After being outscored 6-2 in the opening period, the Mount scored three of the four goals in the second stanza to climb to within 7-5 at the half.
Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.),
Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) and
Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored three straight goals to close the half and bring the Knights to within two at the break.
Western Connecticut finished the opening 30 minutes with an 18-14 advantage in shots and a 14-9 edge in groundballs. Face-offs before halftime also went to the Colonials, 9-3.
Coming out of the break, the Mount moved to within a single shot when Vinny Vaccarro (Floral Park, N.Y.) tallied to open the third. Following a Western Connecticut tally, Bahmer added his second of the night to being the Mount to within 8-7, but the Knights would never be able to draw even in the contest.
Following the Bahmer tally, the Colonials scored four straight goals to end the third and open the fourth to open a 12-7 lead, before Bahmer closed out a three goal night with 7:32 left in the tilt.
Bahmer finished the night with three tallies for the Mount to go along with a pair of groundballs. Kearns scored once and assisted on two other goals and led the Mount with four groundballs in the contest.
Vincent Escudero (Bridgewater, N.J.) closed a strong night with a pair of assists.
A.J. Bolger (West Milford, N.J.) led the Mount with two caused turnovers, while
Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) won seven face-offs and picked up two groundballs.
Western Connecticut was led by four goals apiece from Dennis Schaumloffel and Robert Swensen. Ryan Yursa won 12 face-offs for the Colonials and picked up four groundballs in the win.
Junior
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) suffered the loss in goal after making eight saves for the Knights and picking up two groundballs. Perry Cassidy picked up the win with 12 saves, adding a caused turnover.
Western Connecticut finished the night with a 38-28 advantage in shots and a slim 25-22 edge in groundballs. Face-offs went to the Colonials 14-7, with both teams struggling on the man advantage, with the Mount going 1-for-11.
At 1-1 on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns home on Saturday for a non-conference tilt with Bryn Athyn. Face-off at Kaplan Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
