Women's Basketball Upends Purchase, Advances to Skyline Final

Cleare leads the way with a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double

Newburgh, N.Y. - Senior Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) finished with her seventh double-double of the season as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team dominated Purchase 76-44 in the Skyline Conference Semifinals on Thursday evening to advance to the Skyline Conference Final.

The Knights jumped out to a 12-5 lead following a Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) three at the 5:23 mark of the first quarter. Amber Yarter knocked down a triple for the Panthers to cut the lead to six with 3:57 to go in the quarter. The Knights ended the first period on a 16-2 run as Desrats finished the quarter with 11 points and Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) scored five points during the run.

The Knights pushed the lead to a first half high of 37 points on a Limonta lay in as the Mount began the second quarter on a 17-0 run over the first seven minutes of the period. Purchase ended the quarter on a 9-0 run behind two threes from Yarter and one from Savannah Lopez.

Desrats finished the first half with a team-high 11 points, Lynsday Pace (Cranford, N.J.) scored nine points, Cleare had eight points and six rebounds and Limonta added seven points and six boards. The Knights finished the half shooting a blistering 58.1-percent from the field and were 6-for-13 from behind the three-point line. The Mount held Purchase to 23.3-percent shooting as a team in the half.

The Mount began the third stanza on a 7-2 run following a Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) jumper to push the lead to 54-21. The Panthers responded with a 9-0 run and cut the lead to 24 with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter. The Mount pushed the lead back to 31 after seven straight points, including five points from Cleare, to end the quarter.

A Smith three with 8:00 to go in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to a game-high 38 points as Purchase responded with a mini 7-0 run to cut the lead back down to 31 with 3:23 to go in the quarter. Gabriella Rafaniello (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down a three, Kaitlyn Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) converted a three-point play and Cameron Villanueva (Columbia, Conn.) knocked down a jumper to close the final quarter.

Mount Saint Mary finished the half shooting 42.9-percent as a team and knocked down three triples. Purchase was limited to 32.0-percent from the field and knocked down only one three-pointer. Cleare finished the half with nine points to finish with 17 points on the day.

Cleare finished the night 7-for-9 from the field and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She added 11 rebounds on the night to finish with a double-double. Desrats finished with 16 points, including four threes, on 6-for-11 shooting and a career-high five assists. Limonta chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.

Amber Jones finished with 13 points to lead Purchase, adding four assists and four steals. Yarter ended the night with 11 points and five rebounds for the Panthers.

The Mount concluded the evening shooting 50.8-percent as a team and knocked down nine threes. Defensively, they limited Purchase to 27.3-percent from the field and 6-for-26 from three. The Knights outscored the Panthers 32-8 in the paint and converted 18 points off Purchase turnovers. Mount Saint Mary outrebounded Purchase 45-25 and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds on the evening.

Mount Saint Mary advances to the Skyline Conference Final on Saturday afternoon against the second-seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off with the Mariners is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Kaplan Center.
