Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team completes their regular season slate as they travel to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Tuesday and then host United States Merchant Marine Academy in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Knights and Golden Eagles are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. while the season finale is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
At a Glance: The Knights have won 12 straight games and head into the final two regular season contests at 16-0 in the Skyline Conference after defeating Sarah Lawrence 76-37 on Wednesday evening.
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) continues to lead a balance scoring attack with 11.9 points per game,
Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) is second on the team in scoring with 10.5 per game and
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) has averaged 9.4 points per contest.
Cleare also leads in rebounding with 8.5 per game, Limonta averages 8.1 per contest and
Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) adds 6.2 boards per contest. Cleare is just 28 rebounds short of 1,000 for her career and will become the first player in the Mount's history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.
Smith is the leader in assists with 72, Desrats has 55 and
Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.) has 39 on the season.
Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J) leads in steals with 35, Keenan has 25, and Gritsko has 22 on the season. Cleare owns the team lead in blocks with 28 and Limonta has 12 on the season.
The Mount is averaging 65.1 points per game, good for third in the conference in scoring offense, on 39.1-percent shooting from the field and 29.9-percent shooting from three. They have allowed only 49.5 per night on 29.9-percent shooting and 25.7-percent shooting from the three-point line, ranking second in the Skyline.
The Mount was also ranked third in the first NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional rankings that were released on Tuesday.
Last Time Out: The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team won their 16th straight Skyline Conference contest and extended their winning streak to 11 games as the Knights took care of Sarah Lawrence by a convincing score of 81-24.
Cleare and Limonta each scored 17 points to lead the Mount as Cleare finished the night shooting 6-for-11 from the field on the night and scored her 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in only 19 minutes played. Limonta was 7-for-11 on the night and scored her 17 points in just 13 minutes on the floor.
Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) was 8-for-14 with 16 points in 20 minutes of action.
Smith chipped in eight points, a game-high six assists and four steals while Desrats dished out a career-high five assists in the contest. Tabasco ripped down nine boards and added three steals.
The Mount finished the contest shooting 40.2-percent and converted three three-pointers. They finished 12-for-22 from the free throw line. The Knights defense held the Gryphons to 18.8-percent shooting as a team and 2-for-10 from three-point range. Mount Saint Mary handed out 22 assists on 33 made field goals.
The Knights forced 28 turnovers and turned it into 26 points. The Mount converted 24 second chance points and outscored Sarah Lawrence 56-4 in points in the paint. The Mount also had 47 bench points, outrebounded the Gryphons 67-26 and grabbed 32 offensive rebounds in the contest.
A Look At St. Joseph's-L.I.: The Golden Eagles head into Tuesday's contest with a 3-20 (2-14 Skyline) record on the season. The Golden Eagles dropped a 65-52 Skyline contest to Purchase on Saturday. In their last meeting, the Knights defeated St. Joseph's-L.I. 85-39 in Newburgh on January 15.
Alyssa Signor is the leading scorer for St. Joseph's-L.I. with 16.4 points per game, good for sixth among the conference leaders. Alicia Indence adds 9.7 per game and N'Dea Maddox chips in 7.7 points per contest.
Juliana Cintron-Leonardo leads the Golden Eagles in rebounding with just over eight per game and Signor rips down 5.1 boards per contest. Maddox has the team lead in assists with 56, Indence has 53 assists on the season and Signor has 43 helpers on the year. Signor has forced a team-high 58 steals on the season and is tied with Lindsay McKenna in blocked shots with seven.
The Golden Eagles are ninth in the conference in scoring offense with 51.2 points per game as well as ninth in the conference in scoring defense with 70.5 points per contest.
Scouting U.S. Merchant Marine Academy: The Mariners head into the season finale with a 19-2 (14-1 Skyline) record. USMMA will travel on Old Westbury on Tuesday before heading to Newburgh on Saturday afternoon. In their meeting in Kings Point, the Knights took to the previously undefeated Mariners 57-47 on January 12.
USMMA is led by freshman forward Lauren Hunter and junior Kaleigh D'Arcy who average a combined 31.4 points per contest. Hunter is fourth in the conference in scoring with 17.4 points per game. Hunter is also averaging 12.5 rebounds per outing, good for a double-double average on the season.
Shelby Peters averages nine rebounds per contest and Taylor Hightower rips down 8.5 caroms per outing. Hightower leads in assists with 77 while D'Arcy has 67 helpers on the year. Five members of the Mariners have 20 or more steals on the season and three different players have 30 or more blocks on the year. Hightower leads in steals with 41 and blocks with 43.
The Mariners have the top scoring defense in the conference, only allowing 44.8 points per game. They are fourth in the conference in scoring offense with 62.9 points per contest. Defensively, they are limiting teams to 29.9-percent as a team and 23.0-percent from the three-point line.
Senior Day: Prior to Saturday's contest, four seniors, Cleare, Limonta, Gritsko and
Kassidy Hallum (Lake Grove, N.Y.), will be recognized for their achievements over their four-year careers with the Mount.
What's Next: The Knights will have a first round bye in the Skyline Conference tournament and will host a semifinal contest on Thursday, February 21
st at the Kaplan Center. Time and opponent are TBD.
