Riverdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team was eliminated from the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship on Tuesday following an 11-25, 9-25, 15-25 First Round loss at third seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent. Senior
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) led the Knights with five kills in the match.
The Knights held four one point leads in the early going of the opening set on Tuesday, but the Dolphins put together an 11-1 run to surge in front 18-9 on an Alexandra Madden winner. Mount Saint Vincent went on to close the set on a 6-1 spurt, capped by a Tara Maloney kill, to open a one set advantage.
In the middle frame, the Dolphins jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and allowed the Knights to score back-to-back points just once in the set. A 6-0 run pushed Mount Saint Vincent in front 15-4 and a 3-0 spurt closed out a set two victory to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead.
The Knights stayed within three points in the deciding third set until a five point run from the Dolphins moved them in front 17-9 on a Samantha Schroeder service ace. The Mount scored four of the next five points to climb to within 18-13 on a
Tara Greeley (Stony Point, N.Y.) kill. The Dolphins answered with a 6-1 run to close the set and advance to the semifinal round on Thursday.
Burke finished the night with a team-high five kills for the Mount, adding an ace and a pair of digs. Greeley and
Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) each put away three kills with Hydo chipping in three digs and a block for the Knights.
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) led the team with eight assists and the posted the team's only other service ace.
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.),
Danielle Kralik (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) and
Jenny Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) all matched the team-high with four digs on the night.
Maloney led all players with 17 kills for Mount Saint Vincent, hitting .484, to go along with two aces and four digs. Madison Gale handed out 28 assists on the night and chipped in three aces and closed out a double-double with a match-high 18 digs.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the night with a 39-14 advantage in kills to go along with a 12-2 edge in service aces and a slim 2-1 advantage in total team blocks.
Tuesday's loss ends the Mount's six match winning streak and closes its season at 13-17 overall.
