Knights Take Down Manhattanville In Home Opener

Keenan records second straight double-double

Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team recorded its third straight Skyline victory on Saturday afternoon as the Knights defeated Manhattanville 65-49 in the home opener at the Kaplan Center. Sophomore Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded her second double-double of the season as she led the Mount with 14 points.

The Valiants jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Sarah Coutu scored the first four points for Manhattanville. The Knights quickly tied the game at seven as Keenan laid one in and sophomore Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) knocked down a triple. Mount Saint Mary held a 12-10 lead after the end of the first quarter following a Keenan three pointer with 19 seconds left.

Following an Ali Maekele jumper that cut the Knights lead down to one, the Mount countered with a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes, capped by eight points off the bench from sophomore Julia Lavin (Ledyard, Conn.). Mount Saint Mary held an 11 point lead at the halftime intermission, as Keenan led the way with nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) added four points, four assists and six rebounds.

The Mount finished the half outshooting Manhattanville 36.7 percent to 30.8 percent and made five threes compared to Manhattanville's zero. The Knights outrebounded the Valiants 23-15 as Manhattanville held a 13-11 edge in turnovers forced.

Manhattanville cut the lead to nine points over the first two minutes of the third quarter before the Knights answered with a quick 7-0 run to push the lead to 16 points with 3:09 remaining in the quarter. Mount Saint Mary extended its lead to a game-high 21 points on a Desrats triple with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Valiants whittled the lead away to 14 points before a three-pointer was made from Keenan. Mount Saint Mary's lead never fell below 16 points over the final five minutes as the Mount earned a 16 point victory.

The Knights shot 40 percent from the field in the second half and knocked down five triples. Manhattanville shot 35.7 percent in the second half and made just one three pointer. 

Keenan led the Knights with 14 points and 15 rebounds while Desrats added 12 points and two assists. Bojka chipped in 10 points and six rebounds with Tabasco adding six points, five assists and 10 rebounds. Maekele led the Valiants with 13 points and Faith Johnson-Desilvia added 11 points and six rebounds. 

The Mount finished the contest shooting 38.3 percent from the field and knocked down 10 threes. The Knights limited the Valiants to just one three-point field goal in the game and converted 16 points off turnovers.

Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a non-conference showdown with Hunter College at home on Tuesday evening. Tip-off with the Hawks at the Kaplan Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
