Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Vaughn On Senior Day

Carnovale, Vernon honored prior to match

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team got back into the win column and evened its overall record on Sunday with an impressive 9-0 home win over Vaughn on Senior Day. Prior to the match Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) were recognized for their contributions to the program over the course of their careers.
 
The Knights put together an impressive showing on Sunday, sweeping each of the three doubles matches and dropping just five games over the six singles matches against the Warriors.
 
Carnovale at first singles, Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) at the fourth position and Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) at the sixth slot all posted 6-0, 6-0 triumphs for the Knights. Carnovale moved to 9-1 on the season and won her fourth straight singles decision, while Murray improved to 7-3 and Quinn moved to 4-1 on the season.
 
Junior Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) and Vernon each posted their third victories of the season with Clay winning 6-0, 6-1 at the second position and Vernon recording a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at third singles for the Mount.
 
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) also turned in a strong showing in singles play on Sunday, pushing her record to 7-3 on the season with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
 
In doubles action, each duo won 8-0 with Carnovale and Clay improving to 5-5 at the top flight, Vernon and Goetz moving to 4-5 with a second doubles victory and Murray and Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) winning for the first time together at the third slot.
 
Sunday's win moves Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark overall on the season at 5-5. The Knights return to Skyline Conference play next weekend when they host St. Joseph's-L.I. on October 12. Matches with the Golden Eagles are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
