Newburgh, N.Y. – Hosting St. Joseph's-L.I. in a key Skyline Conference match on Saturday afternoon, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team was topped by the visiting Golden Eagles by a score of 7-2. Senior
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored singles wins for the Knights.
Carnovale continued her stellar senior season on Saturday, battling to a hard fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 first singles victory over her opponent from the Golden Eagles. The victory improves her record at the top flight to 10-1 on the season and gives her double figures in singles wins for the third time in four years. The victory is her 46th triumph, moving her into fourth place all-time on the Mount's wins list.
Murray improved her record on the season to 8-3 overall and 8-2 at the fourth position on Saturday. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory for the Knights, giving her victories in each of her last two outings of the season.
Although the Mount dropped each of three doubles matches, the top pair of the third duo were edge by the Golden Eagles. Carnovale and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) dropped a hard fought 8-5 decision, while
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) and
Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) were edge 8-6 at the third position.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-6 overall on the season and to 2-3 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Knights return to action next weekend when they travel to Purchase on Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. tilt with the Panthers.
