Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team took to the road on Saturday and scored a key 5-4 Skyline Conference win at Purchase.
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.),
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) and
Emily Quinn (Montgomery, N.Y.) earned singles victories for the Mount.
The Mount got off to a strong start against the Panthers, taking two of the three doubles competitions. The second pair of
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) and Goetz cruised to an 8-1 win with Murray and
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) continuing their strong play together with an 8-5 triumph at the third slot.
Despite dropping the first, second and third positions in singles action against the Panthers, the Mount clinched the victory with wins at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions. Murray won her ninth match of the season, moving to within one win of the team lead, after posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the fourth slot.
Goetz continued her strong play in 2019 with her eighth win of the campaign, as she improved to 8-3 on the season. She outlasted her opponent from Purchase at the fifth flight by scores of 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Quinn won for the fifth time in six outings at the sixth position with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph for the Knights.
Saturday's victory evens the Mount's overall record at 6-6 and its conference mark at 3-3. The Knights will finish off the regular season on Sunday when it welcomes St. Joseph's-Brooklyn to Newburgh. Match time with the Bears is set for 4:00 p.m.
