Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team closed the regular season on Monday night with an 8-1 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, clinching the third seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship. Senior
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) won her team leading 11
th singles match of the season in the win.
The Knights began the evening by taking two of the three doubles matches, with the first and third pairs cruising to victory. Carnovale and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) posted an impressive 8-0 victory, collecting their sixth win of the season, while the pairing of
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and
Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) improved to 7-1 with an 8-1 triumph at the third position.
In singles action, Carnovale cruised to her 11
th win of the season at the top flight following a 6-0, 6-1 win that moved her to 11-2 overall on the season and 5-2 against Skyline Conference opponents.
Clay scored her fourth victory of the season at the second slot with a tough 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7) win, with
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) picking up her fourth triumph at the third position with a hard fought 6-4, 6-3 win for the Mount.
The fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions continued to be a strong part of the Mount's lineup on Monday as the trio dropped just two games to the Bears. Murray blanked her opponent at the fourth position in moving to 10-3 on the season, while
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) posted her ninth win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 fifth position victory.
Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished off the night with her fourth win of the year at the sixth slot with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph for the Knights.
Monday's victory moves Mount Saint Mary to 7-6 overall on the season and to 4-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will play in the semifinal round of the Skyline Championship on Thursday at second seed St. Joseph's-L.I. Match is will be announced when it becomes available.
