Women’s Tennis Evens Record With Sweep Of Hartwick

Murray, Imperio stay unbeaten in doubles play

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team evened its overall record and scored back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Tuesday with a 9-0 sweep of non-conference foe Hartwick. Sophomore Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and freshman Katrina Imperio (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) remained unblemished in doubles play in the victory.
 
For the second straight outing, the Mount swept its opponent keyed by a 3-0 start following doubles play. Murray and Imperio improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season in doubles action for the Knights with an impressive 8-1 victory over the Hawks.
 
The top pair of Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) won for the second straight outing and evened their record at 4-4 with a tough 8-6 victory on Tuesday. Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) and Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) also won for the second straight match, easing to an 8-1 triumph at the second position.
 
The top four singles positions dropped just nine total games on Tuesday, with Carnovale improving to 7-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top flight. Clay picked up her second straight victory at the second position with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, while Vernon also scored her second straight win with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the third position. Murray collected her sixth singles win of the season at the fourth position, posting an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win for the Knights.
 
Goetz won her fourth straight match and improved to 6-2 on the season after battling to a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-3) win at fifth singles, with Gracie Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y.) adding her third win of the season with a tough 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) sixth singles victory.
 
With back-to-back sweeps, Mount Saint Mary has improved to 30-18 in singles matches through eight matches and evened its doubles mark at 12-12.
 
Tuesday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 4-4 overall on the season. The Knights return to Skyline Conference play on Saturday when they play host to Farmingdale State. First serve with the Rams is set for 1:00 p.m.
