Alfred, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team dropped its opening game at the Alfred University Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling to Keuka by a tight 3-2 score. Sophomore
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) and senior
Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) were the goal scorers for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary opened a two goal lead inside the first 30 minutes of action on Saturday when Mesoraca and Lynch scored just under 12 minutes apart. Mesoraca got the scoring started when he headed in a feed from
Matthew Wyant (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) at the 17:13 mark of the contest.
The Mount's lead doubled at the 29:00 mark of the contest when Lynch deposited his first goal of the season to move the Knights in front by two tallies.
Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) picked up his first career point with the assist.
Leading by two goals, Mount Saint Mary saw its lead sliced in half late in the opening stanza. Keuka's Noah Ogden buried a penalty kick at the 39:52 mark of the match to get the Wolves to within 2-1 heading into the halftime intermission.
Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the opening period 9-7, but took four of the six corner kicks over the first 45 minutes of action.
Keuka got the game even in the 54
th minute on Saturday and added the eventual game winner 34 seconds later to earn a berth into the championship game of the tournament. Claude Tuyishimire scored at 53:38 to even the score at 2-2 before Samba Doukhansy tallied the deciding goal at 54:12.
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made his first start in goal on Saturday, allowing three goals and making a pair of saves for the Knights.
Sean Madden (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) saw his first action of the season, playing 33:02 and making a single save. Ryan Welte earned the win in goal with four saves for Keuka.
Keuka finished the game with a slim 16-13 edge in shots, while shots on goal in the game were even at 6-6. Mesoraca led the Mount with four shots, while Wyant, Doyle and Bereket watts (Addis Abuba, Ethopia) all finished with two attempts. The Knights dominated corner kicks in the tilt, 8-3.
At 2-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will take on the host Saxons in the consolation game of the event Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
