Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team dropped its second straight game to close the regular season on Saturday, falling on the road at Maritime 13-12. Senior
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with six points, while classmate
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a season-high 23 saves in goal.
Tightly contested throughout, Mount Saint Mary took a 9-6 lead into the intermission after outscoring the Privateers 5-4 in the opening 15 minutes and 4-2 in the second stanza. After allowing the first goal of the second period, the Mount scored four straight times to open a 9-5 lead with three minutes left before halftime. The run featured four different goal scorers, including De Meo who scored once and assisted on two goals over the stretch.
Mount Saint Mary went to the intermission with a 25-20 advantage in shots, while the Privateers held the halftime advantage in groundballs 22-21. Mount Saint Mary held a 9-8 advantage in face-offs at the break and Doerr finished the opening 30 minutes with 10 saves.
Although it was outscored by a goal in the third period, Mount Saint Mary maintained a 12-10 lead through three periods on Saturday. De Meo scored his 33
rd goal of the season coming out of halftime and
Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) added a man-up goal to give the Mount an 11-7 advantage.
Following a
Richard Maher (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) goal late in the third period gave the Mount a 12-9 lead, Maritime scored off the ensuing face-off and went on to score the final four goals of the game to steal the victory. Matt DeMeo tied the score at 12-12 for Maritime with 12:05 left, before Ian Danahy scored the game winning goal with just over seven minutes left. Maritime outshot the Mount 17-3 in the final stanza on Saturday.
De Meo finished the game with three goals and three assists for the Knights with Earle,
Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.),
Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) and Maher all finished with two goals for the Knights.
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) won 14 face-offs for the Knights in the game and joined
Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) with a team-high five groundballs. Martino led the Knights on the day with five caused turnovers.
Matt DeMeo led Maritime with four goals and three assists, with Nick Pellegrino netting three goals and assisting on two others. Mark Buchner led all players with seven groundballs with T.J. Ragusa winning eight of the team's 14 face-offs.
Doerr finished with 20 saves in a game for the first time this season and for the second time in his career. Doerr, who holds the single game record of 27 saves, holds two of the top eight single game save totals in program history. He stopped 10 shots in the fourth period and added two groundballs in the game. Brendan McNally earned the win for Maritime with 20 stops.
Maritime rounded out the day with a 45-43 edge in shots, including a 36-32 advantage in shots on goal. Mount Saint Mary took the groundball battle 37-34 and finished with a 15-14 edge in face-offs. Mount Saint Mary went 15-for-22 in clearing chances and scored twice with the man advantage.
At 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Skyline Conference play, Mount Saint Mary will take on Maritime again on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championship.
