Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team closed out the regular season on Tuesday night with a 16-5 loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Senior Night.
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and senior
Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each finished with three points for the Knights.
Ryan scored her first goal of the game at the 24:29 mark of the first half to bring the Knights to within 2-1, but he visitors ripped off the final 10 goals of the first half to carry a 12-1 lead into the intermission. Meredith Williard scored five times before the break and added an assist to lead the offensive attack.
USMMA outshot Mount Saint Mary 29-4 in the opening 30 minutes, including 23-4 in shots on goal. First half groundballs went to the Mariners 12-7, while draw controls prior to the break were even at 7-7.
Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and
Morgan Pavlik (Monroe, Conn.) scored the first two goals of the second half for the Mount to bring it to within 12-3, but the Mariners scored the next two and four of the final six goals to close out the scoring in the game.
Ryan scored a team-high two goals and added an assist in her final home game, while Condron scored once and assisted on two other goals. Ryan moved her team-high total in goals to 45 and her point total to 54. Condron recorded her team leading 13
th assist and added a groundball and two caused turnovers.
Halpin and Pavlik each finished with a goal with Halpin winning five draw controls and Pavlik picking up a groundball and winning two draws. Senior
Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Mount with five groundballs and finished with a pair of caused turnovers.
USMMA was led by eight goals and nine points from Williard with Maura Malone scoring three times and Jessica Reilly posting two goals and an assist. Reilly and Malone combined for 11 draw controls with Reilly matching the game-high in groundballs with five.
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made the start in goal and made 15 saves in just over 53 minutes of work, with
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) stopping a pair of shots. Hannah Gizzi earned the win in goal for the Mariners with seven saves, adding four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
USMMA outshot the Knights 40-14 overall and 33-13 in shots on goal. The Mariners took the advantage in groundballs 20-14 and won six of the nine draw controls in the second half to finish with a 13-10 edge in the category.
Mount Saint Mary closes the regular season at 7-7 overall and 4-3 in Skyline Conference play.
