Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday following a 16-1 loss to top-seeded USMMA in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championship. Senior
Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored the team's lone goal late in the second half.
After scoring three goals over the opening five minutes of action, the Mariners erupted for 10 goals in the final 13:22 of the first half to carry a commanding 13-0 lead into the intermission. Meredith Willard finished the first half with four goals and three assists for USMMA.
The Mariners held a commanding 23-4 advantage in shots at the intermission that included a 19-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mariners finished with 17 first half groundballs, seven more than the Knights, and dominated draw controls prior to the break, 11-3.
Willard continued her strong game with a goal and an assist in the second half for USMMA, with Ryan getting the Knights on the board with her 46
th goal of the season with just 2:17 left in regulation time.
Ryan moved her team lead in goals to 46 and her team standard in points to 55.
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) picked up her team leading 14
th assists of the year. Megan Cumming (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and
Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) each finished with three groundballs with
Liz Halpin (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) leading the team with three draw controls.
Willard finished the contest with nine points on the strength of five goals and four assists for USMMA with Jessica Reilly adding five goals. Reilly led the team with six draw controls, with Kelly Midas finishing with three points and five draw controls.
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal for the Knights with nine saves and a team-high five groundballs in just over 52 minutes of action.
Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) came on to make a single save in just under eight minutes of work. Hannah Gizzi picked up the win with six stops, adding five groundballs.
USMMA finished the game with the advantage in shots 32-10, shots on goal 26-7, groundballs 24-19 and draw controls 14-4.
Wednesday's loss closes the Mount's season at 7-8 overall.
