Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Manhattanville on Wednesday, dropping a 4-0 decision before rallying for an 8-7 walk-off win in game two. Sophomore
Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.) drove in the winning run with a pinch hit single in the seventh of game two triumph.
Game 1: Manhattanville 4 – Mount Saint Mary 0
Although the Knights outhit the Valiants 7-6 in game one, they could not push a run across. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when the Valiants hit three home runs and scored all four of their runs.
Desiree Buboi led off the seventh with a double and was driven home on a two-run home run from Dolores Diemicke. Evonne Torres followed with a solo home run to push the visitors in front 3-0 and following a pair of strikeouts, Sophia Chapelone homered to close out the scoring in the game.
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) and
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) each recorded two hits in the game for the Knights with
Emily Lang driving a triple.
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) drew a walk for the Knights in the opener.
Diemicke finished the opener 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI for the Valiants with Steph Muller, Diemiecke, Torres and Chapelone scoring runs.
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game one, allowing four runs on six hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out 12. Alycia Feeney won her 10
th game for Manhattanville, striking out five in the complete game shutout.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 8 – Manhattanville 7
After the two teams went scoreless for six innings in the opener, game two featured 15 runs and 22 hits. Manhattanville opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, with Diemicke and Aarin Hartenstein delivering run scoring base hits.
Mount Saint Mary got on the board for the first time and tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning. Almodovar led off the inning getting hit with a pitch and later scored the team's first run on an RBI double from
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.). Eiler was later chased home with the tying run on Lang's second triple of the afternoon.
Manhattanville answered the Mount's inning with a three-run fourth that featured a two-run single from Buboi that pushed the visitors in front 5-2.
Trailing by three runs, the Mount erupted for five runs in the fourth to surge in front 7-5.
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double and later scored on a
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) single. Following a Barbara single and a walk to Connoly, Eiler pushed the Mount in front with a two-out grand slam.
Manhattanville struck right back in the back-and-forth affair, tying the score in the fifth. Samantha Jedrey got the game even at 7-7 with a home run driven out to left center field with nobody out in the inning.
The game remained tied at 7-7 until the Mount's final at-bat when O'Neill singled and
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) came on to run and advanced on a wild pitch. Following a groundout, Bennett came home when Oury shot a single through the left side with two outs in the inning.
Eiler finished off the big game 2-for-4 with a double and a home run to go along with two runs and five RBI. O'Neill and Canto each recorded two hits for the Knights with Lang, Oury and Moustouka all recording a hit and an RBI.
Connoly picked up the win in relief for the Knights, working an inning in relief of Bennett. The starter worked 6.0 innings and struck out two, with Connoly coming on to get the final three outs and moved to 7-6 on the season.
At 12-11 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Friday when it plays host to Oneonta. First pitch on campus in Newburgh is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
