Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team hosted SUNY Oneonta on Friday in a non-conference doubleheader, dropping both ends of the set by scores of 6-2 and 9-4. Senior
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) struck out 14 batters in game one and drove in the 100
th run of her career.
Game 1: Oneonta 6 – Mount Saint Mary 2
The Red Dragons opened the scoring in game one in the third inning when Cori McFall singled up the middle to bring home Dan DelGenio with the game's first run. The 1-0 lead held until the home half of the sixth when the Knights got the game even.
Trailing by a run, Mount Saint Mary saw
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) reach on a fielding error and later scored the tying run when Connoly drove a two-out double out to center field. The RBI was the 100
th of her career.
The Red Dragons answered the equalizing run with five tallies in their final at-bat to pull away for the win. Oneonta strung together six hits in the frame, including a three-run home run from McFall.
Mount Saint Mary was outhit in the game 13-4 with Almodovar finishing the game with a hit and a run scored. Connoly produced the team's lone extra base hit in the game and pushed her program record in RBI to triple figures.
McFall rounded out game one 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI with DelGenio recording two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Oneonta featured five players with at least two hits in the game.
Connoly suffered the loss in game one, working a complete game and allowing six runs on 13 hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out 14, reaching double figures in punch outs for her third straight start. Alyssa Bluethgen picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
Game 2: Oneonta 9 – Mount Saint Mary 4
The Knights jumped out front early in game two on a sacrifice fly from Connoly in the first inning and after Oneonta knotted the score in the top of the third, moved back in front by a run in the home half of the inning.
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y. doubled home Almodovar to give the Knights back a one run lead.
Oneonta answered again in the fourth to tie, before the Mount took its third one run lead of the game in the bottom of the frame.
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) led off the inning with her third home run of the season to move the Knights in front 3-2.
After both teams were held off the board in the fifth, the visitors erupted for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away. Caroline Koch drove in two runs with a single with McFall pushing home two more runs with a double.
The Knights got a run back in their final at-bat and loaded the bases, but scored just once. Eiler drove home
Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) with a two-out single in the inning.
Almodovar and Eiler both finished game two with a pair of hits with Almodovar scoring twice and Eiler driving in two runs. Canto belted her team leading third home run in the game with
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) adding a base hit.
Oneonta was led by a 3-for-4 effort from Brooke Corbett with McFall and Koch each driving in two runs for the Red Dragons.
Bennett suffered the loss, allowing only three earned runs and striking out seven. Julia Calabro picked up the win in relief, allowing one run and striking out five in 3.0 innings.
Friday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 12-13 overall on the season. The Knights return to conference play on Saturday when they play host to Purchase. First pitch at Newburgh Free Academy is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
