Softball Remains Unbeaten In League Play With Senior Day Sweep

Connoly fans 14 in game one win

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team remained unblemished in league play on Saturday with 9-1 and 11-1 conference wins over Old Westbury on Senior Day. Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) struck out 14 in the game one win while Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) drove in four runs in game two.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 9 – Old Westbury 1 (F/6)
The Knights opened a 5-0 lead in the opener following a single run in the second and four more tallies in the third. After the visitors got on the board in the sixth on a solo home run, the Knights closed out the game with four runs in the home half of the inning.

Mount Saint Mary got on the board when Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) scored following an infield single from Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) and a throwing error and erupted an inning later with three hits and four walks. Canto and Morgan O'Neill drove in runs with walks before run scoring singles from Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) and Lauren Oury (Bethpage, N.Y.).

After Old Westbury got a two-out blast from Lauren Bloom in the sixth, the Knights strung together six hits in the bottom of the inning to finish off the game. Barbara drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, with Eiler, Canto and O'Neill producing run scoring base hits in the frame.

Mount Saint Mary outhit Old Westbury 12-3 in the opener with Connoly, Eiler, Canto and O'Neill all finishing with two safeties. Connoly, Eiler and Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) each scored two runs in the game with Canto and O'Neill each driving in a pair.

Connoly was dominant after a shaky start that saw two runners reach scoring position in the first inning. Starting with the last two outs in the first, she struck out 12 straight batters on her way to 14 in the game. She did not allow a walk and moved to 6-5 on the season while lowering her earned run average to 2.38.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 11 – Old Westbury 1 (F/5)
The Knights picked up where they left off in game two, scoring in all four of their at-bats, including five runs in the second and four more in the third.

Barbara scored an unearned run in the first to open the scoring before the Knights recorded five hits in the big second inning. Barbara drove in two runs with a single in the inning and Lang brought home Connoly with a two-out double in the frame.

The Knights took advantage of three Old Westbury miscues in the third and received a run scoring groundout. The Knights closed out the scoring an inning later when Barbara drew a bases loaded walk to chase home her fourth run of the game.

Barbara finished game two 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBI, with Oury and Bennett each recording two hits. Oury tripled and scored three times and Bennett scored twice and drove in one.

Bennett picked up her fourth win in the circle with her sixth complete game of the season. She allowed just an infield single to the Panthers and struck out four against only one walk.

Saturday's sweep moves Mount Saint Mary back above .500 overall at 11-10 and pushes it to 10-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights, following the postponement of Sunday's set with St. Joseph's-L.I., is a home date with Manhattanville on Wednesday. First pitch with the Valiants is scheduled for 3;00 p.m.
