Softball Drops Non-Conference Set At Ramapo

Canto drives in three in game two

Mahwah, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team returned to action on Wednesday and dropped a no-conference doubleheader at Ramapo, falling 3-2 in eight innings and 11-3. Senior Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) finished the day with three hits and three RBI for the Knights.
 
Game 1: Ramapo 3 – Mount Saint Mary 2 (F/8)
The Knights outhit Ramapo in the opener 8-7 and jumped in front 2-0 in their first a-bat of the day. Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) led off the game getting hit by a pitch and later scored the game's first run, coming home on a run scoring single off the bat of Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.).
 
Mount Saint Mary doubled its lead with two outs in the first inning when Morgan O'Neill (Little Falls, N.J.) delivered the second run of the frame. Following an Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) single that loaded the bases, O'Neill singled to left field, pushing home Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) for the early 2-0 lead.
 
The Roadrunners were held off the board until the fourth inning when Carli Egan laced a laced a two-out double that pushed home Christina Brizek. The Mount maintained the 2-1 lead until the seventh inning when Jackie Howarth drove in the tying run on a single that delivered Harper Patsko who led off the frame with a walk.
 
With the game tied 2-2 and the international tie breaker in effect, the Knights were unable to push across the go ahead run that advanced to third on a groundout. Ramapo capitalized with two outs in the home half of the inning when Egan singled down the left field line to bring home Ally Spellman with the winning run.
 
Canto and O'Neill each finished the opener with two hits with Connoly joining O'Neill with an RBI in the game. Almodovar and Barbara each scored runs for the Knights in game one.
 
Egan was one of two Roadrunners with two hits in game one and drove in a pair of runs in the win. Brizek picked up a hit and a run and earned the complete game victory in the circle for Ramapo. She struck out one, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks.
 
Connoly suffered the loss in the opener, working 7.2 innings and surrendering two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out five in the game, pushing her season total to 72.
 
Game 2: Ramapo 11 – Mount Saint Mary 3
After a tightly contested game one, Ramapo opened a 5-0 lead in game two on Wednesday and never trailed in the contest. Krista Verrino recorded a run scoring base hit in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch, with Carly Vadinsky driving in a run with a walk and Nicole Hernandez picking up an RBI with a bases loaded hit by pitch.
 
Trailing by five runs, the Knights put two tallies on the board in the fourth to get back to within 5-2. Canto laced a double to right field that delivered Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) and Connoly with the Mount's first two runs of the tilt. The Mount's third run was also delivered by Canto in the sixth.
 
Ramapo answered with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to finish off the scoring in the game. Egan, Brizek and Verrino all drove in runs with hits in the fourth, with Egan adding a run scoring double in the sixth for the Roadrunners.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outhit 8-2 in game two, with Ramapo showing three players with two hits. Egan finished 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a walk, with Hernandez going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Shannon Cox and Olivia Mahon each scored twice for the Roadrunners in game two.
 
Canto and Connoly picked up the only hits for the Knights in game two with Barbara joining Eiler and Connoly with a run scored. Canto's three RBI in the game give her 14 on the season, just two off the team lead.
 
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game two, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. She surrendered six walks and struck out six for the Knights. Katrina Buczkowski picked up the win, allowing two runs on two hits in 5.2 innings.
 
Wednesday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary back below .500 overall at 9-10. The Knights return to Skyline Conference play on Saturday when they play host to Old Westbury on Senior Day. First pitch with the Panthers is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
