Mount Saint Mary Collects Two Wins Against CCNY

Knights record 20 hits over two wins

Fishkill, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team picked up a pair of two-run wins on Wednesday against CCNY, topping the Beavers 8-6 and 9-7 in a non-conference doubleheader at Dutchess Stadium. The Knights recorded 10 hits in each win, with four Knights producing multiple hits in the game one victory.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 8 – CCNY 6
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Mount Saint Mary pulled in front for good in the game with four runs in the home half of the third inning. The Knights recorded four hits in the frame, including a run scoring triple from Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Anthony Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.), Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Christopher Introcaso (Newburgh, N.Y.) also drove in runs with base hits in the frame.
 
Mount Saint Mary spread its lead to 8-2 with four more tallies in the bottom of the fifth frame, recording three more hits. John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) got the scoring started with a run scoring single and Introcaso delivered two more runs for the Knights with a single to centerfield.
 
The visitors made things interesting in the seventh with four runs, including a two-run double from Sardar Khanvivardi.  CCNY finished the frame with three hits and left one runner on base.
 
Nick and Anthony Rizzo both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener with Introcaso finishing up 2-for-4 with three RBI. Braden Perry (Brockport, N.Y.) collected a pair of hits for the Knights with Jaden Bonet (Bronx, N.Y.) and Goodwin delivering runs.
 
Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) earned the win on the mound and moved to 1-0 on the season with 5.0 solid innings of work. He did not allow a run after the first inning and finished with two strikeouts. Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) recorded the final six outs for the Mount, striking out one.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 9 – CCNY 7
In a back-and-forth affair, the Knights rallied from a three run deficit early in the game with five runs in the second inning. Nick Rizzo and Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) each produced run scoring doubles in the inning, with Justin Maldonado (Cold Spring, N.Y.) and Chris McLaren (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) delivering runs.
 
CCNY answered with two runs in the third inning to knot the score at 5-5, before the Knights pulled back in front 7-5 with single runs in the third and fifth innings. Kevin Colgan (Islip, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to put the Knights in front 6-5 and Kevin Edgar (Southampton, N.Y.) drove in Joe Galasso (Plainview, N.Y.) with a double in the fifth.
 
The visitors answered again with two runs in the sixth to even the score at 7-7, before the Knights closed out the scoring in the home half of the inning with two unearned runs. Mirra reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt that saw Nick Rizzo and McLaren scampering home with the deciding runs.
 
Colgan rounded out game two 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored with Nick Rizzo picking up two more hits, including a double, and scoring two runs. Mirra also doubled and drove in two runs for the Knights in the win.
 
Nick Zestanakis (Bayside, N.Y.) earned the win in relief for the Knights with Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.) adding two scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen. Santana earned the save with a clean seventh inning for the Knights.
 
At 14-7 overall, Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Saturday when it travels to league rival USMMA. First pitch with the Mariners is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
