Women’s Lacrosse Topped By Smith, 14-7

Ryan nets five goals for the Knights

Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored five goals, but it was not enough as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team suffered a 14-7 non-conference home loss to visiting Smith College on Wednesday evening.
 
Smith raced out to a 6-0 lead over the first 15:53 of the contest, before the Knights rallied to outscore the Pioneers 5-3 over the final 13:25 of the first half to climb to within four goals at the intermission. Ryan scored four times in the first half on Wednesday with Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scoring her second of the season in the final minute of the first half.
 
The visitors finished with a 26-11 advantage in shots over the opening 30 minutes and held the first half edge in groundballs 21-9 and draw controls 11-4.
 
The Knights managed just two second half goals, with Olivia Green (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scoring early in the frame and Ryan scoring her fifth with just over nine minutes left in regulation. The Mount never climbed closer than four goal halftime deficit and saw Smith take a game-high seven goal lead when Bella Ferraro scored with 5:54 left to give the visitors the final 14-7 advantage.
 
Ryan tallied a season-high five goals and moved her team-high in the category to eight and in points to 11. Condron finished with a goal and an assist for the Knights with Maggie Pedersen (Glasco, N.Y.) assisting on a pair of tallies.
 
Senior Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Mount with five groundballs and joined Pedersen with a team-high three draw controls. Pedersen added four caused turnovers for the Knights to go along with three groundballs.
 
Smith was led by three assists and five points from Chloe Harris, with Julia Hamilton potting three goals and finishing with four points. Caroline Myran finished with three points and won seven draw controls and was one of three players to collect five groundballs.
 
Junior Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made the start for the Knights in goal and made three saves, with freshman Jackie Finkel (Warwick, N.Y.) playing a career-high 44:07 and making a career-best nine saves. Moira Anderson picked up the win for Smith with three stops.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game 40-15 with Smith holding the edge in groundballs 34-19and draw controls 16-7. The Knights finished the night 16-for-23 in clearing chances, while Smith went 19-for-22.
 
Wednesday's loss drops the Mount to 1-2 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a home contest against Wilkes on Saturday afternoon. Opening Draw at Kaplan Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
