Andrew Holmes (Niskayuna, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 19 points and led three Knights in double-figures as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team posted a 74-67 road win at St. Joseph's-L.I. in the regular season finale.
The Knights went without a field goal for over three minutes to open the game, but moved out in front 12-6 on a
Jason Jones (Lansdale, Pa.) three-pointer 7:59 into the tilt. A
Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) lay-in nearly a half minute later started a 15-3 run for the Knights that saw them move in front 27-11 on a
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) conversion with just over seven minutes left before halftime.
Mount Saint Mary matched the game-high 16 points lead on a
Gerard Nocera (Holmdel, N.J.) three-pointer at the 6:47 mark of the first half, before it took a 39-29 lead into the intermission. St. Joseph's clawed back to within four points with 3:10 left in the half, but the Knights closed the half on a 7-1 spurt to build the halftime advantage back to double-figures on a Holmes layup with 1:09 left before the break.
The Mount shot just over 41-percent from the floor before halftime and went 7-for-15 from behind the arc. Wolff led the scoring effort with 12 first half points, joining Holmes and Nocera with two three-point field goals. The trio combined for 26 points and a 6-for-11 effort from three-point range in the first half.
St. Joseph's knotted the score at 43-43 on an Isaiah Moore three-point play just under four minutes into the second half, but a Nocera lay-in got the lead back for the Knights and started an 8-2 stretch that saw the lead grow back to 51-45 on a
Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) bucket with 15:12 left before halftime.
The Golden Eagles grabbed their a 54-52 lead on a Moore triple with just under 13 minutes left to play and held a 59-57 lead on a Brad Weiss tip-in at the midway point of the second half. The Knights evened the score at 59-59 on a pair of
Kendall Francis (Great Neck, N.Y.) free-throws that started a 17-8 spurt to close the contest. Wolff gave the Mount the lead for good on a Wolff layup with 9:22 left to play.
The Mount improved to 43.5-percent shooting after halftime, but made just one three-pointer after the break. The Golden Eagles knocked in six triples in the second half and made five more field goals than the Knights. The difference came at the free-throw line, where the Knights outscored the Golden Eagles 14-2 in the second frame.
Holmes finished the game 6-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line on Saturday in reaching his career-high point total. He added six rebounds and a pair of blocks to the winning effort. Wolff posted 16 points in the win, adding a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of steals, while Nocera netted 12 points and handed out three assists.
McDine led the team with four assists and chipped in with eight points with
Connor Bacci (Bayside, N.Y.) adding six points and six rebounds for the Knights.
Moore led St. Joseph's with a game-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds, adding two assists, a block and two assists. Jonah Caldwell grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, chipping in seven points, two blocks and two steals.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game shooting 42.1-percent overall and an even 40-percent from beyond the arc. The Knights outscored St. Joseph's 18-4 from the free-throw line to offset a 25-13 disadvantage in points off of turnovers.
At 13-12 overall, Mount Saint Mary will learn its seed, opponent and location for the First Round of the 2018 Skyline Conference Championship at the conclusion of tonight's Purchase at Yeshiva contest.
