Mount Saint Mary Has Seven Game Win Streak Snapped Against Middlebury

Bojka and Keenan led the way with 11 points each

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team's seven game winning streak was snapped on Monday afternoon, following a 64-44 defeat at the hands of Middlebury. Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) each had 11 points for the Knights.

The Panthers got off to a hot start in the first quarter, jumping out to a 13-4 lead following a 7-0 run that was capped off by Betsy Knox's mid-range jumper. Middlebury finished the quarter with a 21-9 advantage behind Emily Wander's two three-pointers. Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) led the way with three points in the first stanza for the Mount.

Middlebury once again ran out on a quick 11-3 run to start the second period to push their lead to 20 points with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Knights responded with a 6-0 run with four points from Bojka and two from Keenan. A Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) three-pointer cut the lead to 16 heading into the halftime break.

The Panthers' lead never dropped below 16 in the third quarter and was pushed to 23 following a Maya Davis layup with one minute remaining in the period. The Knights outscored the Panthers by a point in the fourth quarter, finishing the game trailing by 20. Keenan finished with a team-high nine points in the second half.

Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.), Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, Conn.) and Tabasco each chipped in five points on the afternoon for the Knights. Bojka, Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) and Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) each had a team-high four rebounds and Gritsko had three assists. Keenan finished the day 4-for-7 from the field and knocked down three triples. Bojka finished 4-for-8 and made three free throws.

Maya Davis was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 14, Catherine Harrison had 12 and Kira Waldmann finished the day with 10 points. Davis finished with 12 rebounds, good for a double-double. Colleen Caveney had the game-high in assists with eight on the day for Middlebury.

Middlebury finished the day outshooting the Knights 38.5-percent to 30.2-percent. The Panthers knocked down three more three-pointers, while the Mount knocked down one more free throw. Middlebury dominated the paint, outscoring the Knights 24-14, and cashed in 21 second chance points. The Panthers also converted 10 Mount turnovers into 10 points and outrebounded Mount Saint Mary 33-19.

At 8-3 overall, Mount Saint Mary begin a two-game road trip against SUNY New Paltz on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
