Knights Travel To NYU To Open Play In ECAC Tournament

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team will continue play in the 2018 season when it takes part in the ECAC Tournament on Wednesday night. The Knights will travel to New York University for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Violets at their Brooklyn Athletic Facility with live stats and video available for those unable to attend.

At A Glance: The Knights enter Wednesday's match at 18-14 overall after losing to St. Joseph's-LI, 3-1, in the Skyline Conference semifinal last Thursday. Alex Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) had a strong outing with 16 kills and junior Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) had 12 kills and five blocks for the Mount. Senior Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 40 assists in the match and sophomore Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.) had 23 digs.

Mount Saint Mary features three players with at least 100 kills on the season, led by a team-high 267 from Burke, a First Team All-Skyline Conference honoree, 248 from Klesin and 154 from junior Madelyn Barberan (Bedford Hills, N.Y.), who garnered Second Team all-conference honors. Klesin leads the team in kills per set (2.82) and Burke is second (2.47).

Wall leads the team in service aces with 45 entering Wednesday's tilt and is the team leader in digs with 328. Barberan is second on the team in digs with 290 and Gries is third on the team in digs with 210, second on the team in aces with 34, and has handed out a career-high 838 assists, averaging 8.22 per set.

Burke leads the team in blocks with 71, senior Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) is second with 36 and Klesin is third with 34.

Scouting the Violets: NYU is 18-16 overall after dropping their last match in the UAA championships to Brandeis, 3-2.

Nazzerine Waldon is the leader in kills with 283, Abby Ausmus is second with 271 and Gretchen Kincade is third with 225. Stella Alverson is the assist leader with 471, Katie Goyette is second with 359 and Daryl Mitchell is second with 279.

The Violets have seven players with double digit service aces with Alverson being the leader with 33 and Waldon and Ausmus tied for second with 31. Jacqueline Kupeli is the leader in digs with 419 and Waldon is second with 305. Ausmus leads in blocks with 113, Kincade is second with 83 and Emily Kleck is third with 76.

ECAC Championship History: The Knights return to the ECAC Tournament for the first time since 2011, when they reached the quarterfinal round. They also reached the quarterfinal round in 2010.

What's At Stake: The winner of this match will take on the winner of Misercordia and John Jay College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cabrini University.
