Men's Soccer Begins Title Defense Wednesday Against Old Westbury

Knights and Panthers meet for second straight season in semifinal round

Newburgh, N.Y. – The top-seeded Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team looks to defend the conference crown as it opens play in the 2018 Skyline Conference Championship on Wednesday with a semifinal match against fourth seeded Old Westbury. Kick-off at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with live stats available for those who cannot attend.

At A Glance: The Knights enter Wednesday's semifinal with a 12-5-1 overall record and winners of their last four regular season contests. The Mount's only conference loss came at the hands of Maritime, a 3-0 defeat, on the road on October 7.

Freshman Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) leads the team in goals with eight and was voted the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on October 15.

Classmate Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) is the team leader in points with 20 and is tied with senior Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) for second on the team in goals with six. Wyant was voted for Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for two consecutive weeks, October 1 and October 8 and also this week's reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week.

Entering Wednesday's contest, Wyant is tied for the conference lead in assists with eight and is sixth in the league in points.

In goal, the Knights have used three keepers with Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) and Jakup Myrtja (Newburgh, N.Y.) seeing the most action. Rapp has played 1048 minutes and has stopped 35 shots to go along with an .673 save percentage, a 1.46 goals against average and five shutouts. Myrtja has seen time in 507 minutes and made 24 saves to go along with a .750 save percentage and a 1.42 goals against average.

Last Time Out: The Knights secured the top seed in the conference championship with a 2-1 home win over St. Joseph's-LI on October 24. Wyant scored off a free kick and Anthony Gugliemo (Setauket, N.Y.) scored off a ball played in by Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.) to put the Knights on top. Rapp made two saves for the victory in net.

Previewing The Panthers: Old Westbury is coming off a 0-0 First Round decision against Farmingdale State on Sunday in which it advance on penalty kicks, 3-1.

Edens Avril, who was Skyline Player of the Week on September 24, leads the team in goals with 10 and is tied for the team lead in points with 20. Nick Gino, the Skyline Rookie of the Week on October 22, is second on the team in goals with nine and is tied with Avril for the points lead.

Peter Young, who was voted Skyline Player of the Week on September 10, is third on the team in goals with five and points with 11. Avril is tied for third in the conference for goals and fifth for points while Gino is tied for fifth in goals and fifth in points. Avril also leads the conference in game-winning goals with five.

Mike Warren, Skyline Player of the Week on October 8, has started all 19 games in goal to date for Old Westbury and enters Wednesday's contest with an .829 save percentage, a 0.63 goals against average, 58 saves and seven shutouts. Warren currently stands tied for second in the conference in shutouts, second in goals against average and first in save percentage.

Regular Season Matchup: The Mount and Old Westbury played to a 0-0 (2OT) draw on October 5. The Mount held the shots advantage of 12-10 and Old Westbury held a slim shots on goal advantage of 6-5. Rapp made six saves in goal for the Knights.

Championship History: The Mount looks to defend their crown following a conference championship victory over St. Joseph's-LI, 1-0, a season ago. Since 2007, the Mount has qualified for the Skyline Conference Championship nine times and advanced to the championship final in 2012, 2013, and 2017. The Knights claimed the conference crown in 2013 with a 2-1 win over Farmingdale State.

The Knights and the Panthers met last year in the semifinal match, with the Knights winning 2-0 to advance to the conference championship.

Knights In The Community: Mount Saint Mary SAAC will he holding a canned food drive at both games of Wednesday's doubleheader. For each canned good donated, you will receive Halloween candy in our Cans for Candy Drive.

What's At Stake: The winner of Wednesday's game will square-off with the winner of the Merchant Marine and Maritime semifinal on Saturday for a chance to represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament.
