Women’s Volleyball Swept At Preseason Favorite USMMA

Barberan posts team-high in kills, digs

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team had its three match winning streak stopped on Wednesday with a 17-25, 15-25, 16-25 road loss at Skyline Conference preseason favorite USMMA. Junior Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) rounded out the night with team-highs in both kills and digs.
 
The Knights were limited to just nine kills in the match and hit -.094 against the Mariners. Just four players recorded a kill for the Mount, with Barberan leading the way with four winners. Alex Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) put away three kills for the Knights, with Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.Y.) each recording one kill.
 
Barberan paced the Knights with eight digs in the contest with Jenny Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) finishing off the match with seven digs in one set of work.
 
Klesin and Spinelli each led the Mount with three total blocks in the match with Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) limited to seven assists. Burke and Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.Y.) finished with the only service aces on the night.
 
USMMA was led by 22 kills and a .556 attack percentage from Kate Lefler with Taylor Gilbertson finishing off a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Kyleigh Kappas led all players with 39 assists and Nicole Ibinson lifted a match-high 16 digs.
 
USMMA closed the night with a 43-9 advantage in kills and a 10-3 edge in service aces. Total team blocks in the match were even at 5-5.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 9-10 overall on the season and to 2-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will return to play on Saturday when they travel to Danbury, Conn. to take on Western Connecticut and Nichols.
