Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team began a stretch of three matches in three days on Friday with a tight 5-4 loss on the road at Brooklyn College. The Knights scored singles victories in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions and won the third doubles match.
The Mount fell behind 2-1 following the doubles competition on Friday, picking up its only win at the third slot. The duo of
Jessalyn Goetz (Bethel, N.Y.) and
Katie Murray (Highland Mills, N.Y.) earned an 8-2 victory. The top pair of
Antionetta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) suffered a heartbreaking 7-8 (8-10) defeat.
In singles action, freshman
Sarah Canzone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) eased to a 10-3 victory at the fourth position, with Murray following with a hard fought 10-7 win at the fifth slot. Goetz continued her strong recent play for the Knights with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the sixth position.
Friday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary back below the .500 mark overall on the season at 5-6. Next up for the Knights is a trip to league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday. Match time with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
