Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team saw six different players record a point on Friday as it took its 2017 season opener with a 3-1 road victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) potted his first career goal, picking up the game winner early in the second half.
After controlling play for much of the opening period, the Mount finally broke through with the game's first goal in the 41
st minute of play to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Junior
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) picked up his first tally of the season off a centering pass from
Bereket Watts (Southhold, N.Y.) at the 40:30 mark of the opening frame.
The Knights dominated shots in the first 45 minutes, heading into halftime with a 13-1 advantage in the category. The Mount also took two of the three corner kicks in the first half on Friday.
Mount Saint Mary extended its lead to two goals at in the 57
th minute and opened a 3-0 lead with a quick third goal. Mesoraca headed in the game winner off a pass from
Joseph Sadofsky (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at the 56:24 mark and
Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) followed with his first of the year just 40 seconds later when he put home a free kick started by
Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.).
The Knights maintained the shutout until the 86
th minute when the Griffins broke through with their only goal of the game. Tyler Blair finished off a rebound from Cole Smith to cut the deficit to the final 3-1 decision.
Dolan led the Knights with five shots with Mesoraca and Sadofsky each finishing with three attempts for the Mount. Fuge and
Joe Bacalhau (Woodbridge, N.J.) each rounded out the day with a pair of shots in the win.
Freshman
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) earned the win in goal in his first career start without having to make a save in 45 minutes of work. Classmate
Jakup Myrtja (Newburgh, N.Y.) played the second half for the Knights and stopped two shots. Ryan Oyola finished with four saves in just over 69 minutes of work for the Griffins.
Mount Saint Mary finished the day with a 17-7 advantage in overall shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mount took five of the eight corner kicks in the game, while fouls in the tilt were whistled 10-8 against Gwynedd Mercy.
At 1-0 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Sunday when it travels to local foe Vassar. Kick-off with the Brewers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
