Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team suffered its first league loss of the season on Saturday, following a hard fought 13-12 defeat by St. Joseph's-L.I. Senior
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) led the Mount with seven goals and five draw controls.
St. Joseph's jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead over the first 10 minutes of Saturday's contest, before the Knights went on a three goal run to even the score with 16:36 left before halftime.
Courtney Condron (Franklin Square, N.Y.) started the run with
Kayla Gilligan (Amityville, N.Y.) knotting the score with a man-up tally.
The Knights grabbed their first lead of the game at the 4:35 mark of the first stanza on a Gattoni marker, with freshman
Mikaela Rios (Mastic, N.Y.) breaking a 6-6 tie with 2:35 left before halftime. St. Joseph's responded with a Kristin Carroll man-up goal 13 seconds later to tie the score at 7-7 heading into halftime.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Knights 18-13 prior to the break and picked up 12 of the 20 groundballs awarded. Mount Saint Mary entered the break with a 9-6 advantage in draw controls.
The two teams traded the first four goals of the second half, before the visitors scored three straight times to open a 12-9 lead just over eight minutes into the second half. The Mount and St. Joseph's traded the next two goals, before Mount Saint Mary scored twice in the final 6:58 to get to within a goal. The Knights won the draw control following Gattoni's seventh of the game, but could not get an attempt at the tying goal.
Gattoni scored seven of the team's 12 goals and led the team with five draw controls.
Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied twice for the Knights with Rios finishing with a goal and two assists in the contest.
Julia Fitzpatrick (Shelton, Conn.) won four draw controls for the Mount with
Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) posting three draw controls and a pair of groundballs.
Chelsea Henke (Pawling, N.Y.) led the team with three groundballs and added a caused turnover.
St. Joseph's was led by five goals and two assists from Kristin Carroll, with Nicole Stoppelli scoring three times and assisting on another goal. Carroll won four draw controls and Samantha Caruso caused four turnovers.
Sophomore
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, .Y.) went the distance in goal for the Knights, making eight saves and picking up a groundball. Lindsay Ramos made eight stops in the win and led all players with five groundballs.
For the game, Mount Saint Mary was outshot 28-23 overall and 21-20 in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles took the groundball battle 19-14 and won 15 of the 27 draw controls contested.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-5 overall on the season and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home league date with Old Westbury on Tuesday. Opening Draw with the Panthers is set for 7:00 p.m.
