Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team suffered its third straight loss on Tuesday night with a key 10-9 overtime defeat at the hands of visiting Old Westbury. Senior
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) led the scoring attack with five points, while
Amanda Clemens led the Knights with five groundballs.
Mount Saint Mary took its only lead of the game in the early going on Tuesday when Gattoni potted back-to-back goals nearly 11 minutes apart to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage with 16:51 left before halftime.
Old Westbury rallied with the next three goals to take a 4-2 lead before
Olivia Green (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) got the Mount back on the board with 7:33 remaining before the break. The Knights stayed within a goal until the final half minute of the first half when Taylor Guarneri scored to send Old Westbury into halftime with a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers closed out the opening 30 minutes with a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Panthers were plus-three at the break in groundballs with the Knights handling draw controls, 7-2.
After the visitors scored consecutive goals to open the second half and build a four goal advantage, the Knights went to work and scored six of the next eight goals. Following a Natasha Treuman goal with 17:05 left that gave the Panthers a 9-5 lead, the Mount scored four straight, including the ninth goal of the year from
Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) with 5:12 left in regulation to even the game at 9-9.
Mount Saint Mary went on to have a possession in the final 20 seconds, but had s shot blocked with 16 ticks left to send the game into the extra period.
Old Westbury won the draw in the overtime period and after each team turned the ball over Treuman scored her sixth goal of the game off a feed from Amanda Weir 60 seconds into overtime to give the Panthers their third league win of the season.
Treuman led all players in the game with six goals and added four groundballs and four draw controls to the winning effort. Taylor Guarneri picked up six groundballs and Jessica Tuckruskye added a groundball and a pair of caused turnovers.
Gattoni finished with four goals and an assist to go along with two groundballs and three draw controls for the Knights. Ryan tallied twice and
Mikaela Rios (Mastic, N.Y.) finished with an assist. Clemens led the team with five groundballs and closed a strong night with four caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) finished the night with eight saves for the Knights in goal and closed a strong all-around game with three caused turnovers and three groundballs. Ashley Gugliuzzo earned the win with five stops for the Panthers.
An even game throughout, The Panthers finished with a slim 25-23 edge in shots and an 18-14 advantage in shots on goal. Groundballs went to Old Westbury 22-21 and the Panthers won 11 of the 21 draw controls contested.
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-6 overall on the season and to 2-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a road tilt at league rival USMMA on April 19. Opening Draw with the Mariners is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
