Baseball Moves Winning Streak To Six Games With Sweep Of Yeshiva

Sookdeao works shutout in game one win

Ridgefield Park, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team pushed its winning streak to six games on Friday with a pair of Skyline Conference wins at Yeshiva. Senior Stephan Sookdeo (Carmel, N.Y.) worked a shutout in an 11-0 game one win, while Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) drove in three runs in an 11-1 game two triumph.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 11 – Yeshiva 0
The Knights posted their second straight shutout in game one, outhitting the Maccabees 11-6 and taking advantage of five Yeshiva miscues. After being held off the board in the first frame, the Knights scored three times in the second, singles runs in the third and fourth innings and then three runs each in the fifth and sixth frames.
 
Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) drove in two runs with a single in the second and Chris McLaren (Cornwall, N.Y.) delivered Pepe with a run scoring single to give the Mount all the scoring they would need in the game.
 
Christopher Introcaso (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Pepe scored unearned runs in the third and fourth innings before Introcaso added another run in the fifth on a wild pitch. Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) drove in Rizzo with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Kevin Edgar (Southampton, N.Y.) scored on a groundout to give the Knights an 8-0 lead.
 
Mount Saint May closed out the scoring in the game in the sixth with three more tallies. Peter Knights (White Plains, N.Y.) delivered a pair of runs with a single and John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) crossed out a double play for the Mount's 11th run.
 
Rizzo finished game one 2-for-3 with a run and a double. Edgar was 2-for-4 with two runs and Pepe finished up 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Knights drove in a pair of runs with McLaren and Joey Pugliese (Highland, N.Y.) each drawing a pair of walks.
Sookdeo moved to 2-0 on the season with 7.0 shutout innings. He allowed six singles to the Maccabees and struck out four without walking a batter.
 
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 11 – Yeshiva 1
The Knights jumped out in front with three runs in the top of the third in game two and tacked on two runs in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the sweep.
 
All three third inning runs were unearned with Santana scoring on a balk and Pepe crossing on a run scoring base hit from Edgar. Rizzo and Pepe added the fourth inning runs with sacrifice flies to give the Knights a 5-1 lead.
 
Rizzo pushed home Santana and Knights with a double in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1 with Matthew Kozireski (Montgomery, N.Y.) adding a sacrifice fly as part of the three run sixth inning for the Knights.
 
The Mount pounded out 16 hits in game two with six players recording at least two hits. Santana finished 3-for-3 with two runs, while Rizzo, Pepe, Joe Galasso (Plainview, N.Y.), Kevin Colgan (Islip, N.Y.) and Knights all posting two hits. Santana finished with a double and three steals in the win.
 
Introcaso picked up his first win on the mound in game two, working 5.0 effective innings. He allowed a run on five hits and struck out three as he moved to 1-0. Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Alexander Maher (Mineola, N.Y.) each worked scoreless innings in relief for the Mount.
 
Friday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 11-23 overall and to 8-8 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights finish off the home schedule on Saturday when they play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. First pitch at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
