Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team closed out the home regular season schedule on Saturday with a 15-11 Skyline Conference win over Purchase on Senior Day.
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) led the scoring attack with six goals and added five draw controls.
Purchase opened the game with three of the first four goals of the contest and used a four goal run in the middle stages of the period to open an 8-2 advantage of the Knights. Madi Smith scored twice in the run for the Panthers, while Emma Porter scored half of the team's first eight tallies.
Following a Smith marker with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, the Knights closed the opening stanza on a 5-0 run to climb back to within 8-7 heading into halftime.
Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Amanda Clemens (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored with the man advantage for the Knights over the run.
The Knights outshot Purchase 16-14 before halftime with
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and
Carolyn Smith (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) combining for four stops for the Knights. Mount Saint Mary held an 11-7 edge in groundballs after 30 minutes, while Purchase won 10 of the 16 draw controls contested before halftime.
Mount Saint Mary maintained its momentum coming out of halftime, scoring the first two goals of the period to move in front for the first time of the day on a Gattoni marker just over two minutes into the frame.
Following a Porter tally that tied the score at 9-9, the Knights ripped off the next five goals to open a 14-9 lead. Purchase would get as close as three goals in the final two minutes, but a Clemens tally with 1:21 left in the game finished off the win for the Mount.
Mount Saint Mary had four players with at least two goals, including Gattoni who added an assist for a team-high seven points. She scored three free-position goals in the game and led the Mount with five draw controls.
Clemens, Ryan and
Kayla Gilligan (Amityville, N.Y.) each scored two goals with Clemens winning four draw controls.
Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Knights with four groundballs, while
Allison Dionne (Burlington, Conn.) and
Jennifer Bones (Camden, Del.) each caused a pair of turnovers.
Porter led all players in the game with seven goals and eight points for Purchase with Smith and Zoe Hines each scoring twice. Hines won a game-high six draw controls, while Meghan Organ scooped five groundballs.
Smith recorded her first career win between the pipes in relief on Saturday, playing a career-high 40:25 and stopping a career best seven shots. Allyson Wong made three saves for Purchase in the loss.
Mount Saint Mary outshot Purchase 29-27 on the day, while the Panthers held a 21-18 edge in shots on goal. Groundballs went to the Knights 20-19 and the Mount rallied for a 15-13 advantage in draw controls after winning nine of the 12 taken in the second half.
Saturday's victory improves Mount Saint Mary to 5-6 overall on the season and to 4-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Maritime on Tuesday night. Opening Draw with the Privateers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
