Knights Post Road Sweep At Mount Saint Vincent

Moustouka drives in three in game two win

Bellerose, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team ran its winning streak to five games and collected its second straight conference sweep on Monday with a 1-0 win game one win in eight innings and a 6-2 triumph on the road at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) drove in the winning run and recorded the win in the circle in the opener, with Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) driving in three runs in game two.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 1 – Mount Saint Vincent 0 (8 innings)
Mount Saint Mary recorded seven hits in Monday's opener and stranded runners on second and third with no one out in the second and left the go ahead run at second with two outs in the seventh before breaking through in the eighth.

Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) led off the frame with a single and was quickly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a fly out, Connoly shot a single up the middle to drive home Sommer with the game's only run.

Connoly worked a clean bottom half of the eighth to pick up her seventh win of the season and move to 7-3 on the season. Connoly worked her team leading 11th complete game of the season and picked up her first shutout of the year after allowing just a two out single in the first inning. She struck out nine and walked one as she lowered her season earned run average to 1.51.

At the plate Connoly finished 2-for-3 with Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) going 2-for-4 with a double. Sommer finished with a hit and run with Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Moustouka adding base hits in the win.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 6 – Mount Saint Vincent 2
The Knights found themselves down by two runs after an inning in game two before tying the game in the second and moving in front with a run in the third. The Mount broke the game open and completed the sweep with three tallies in the top of the sixth inning.

Down by two runs, The Knights got runners to second and third with two outs in the second before Moustouka doubled to right center field to push home Connoly and Eiler to even things at 2-2. The Knights moved in front an inning later when Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) tripled home Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) to take a 3-2 advantage.

Leading by a run in the late innings, the Knights got four straight singles, including run scoring base hits from Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) and Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.), and a run scoring fielder's choice from Moustouka to close out the scoring in the game.

Bennett won her sixth straight decision and moved to 7-3 on the season in the circle with her fifth complete game of the campaign. She allowed two runs on five hits and fanned four for the Knights.

Bennett added a hit, run and RBI at the plate in game two with Eiler going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Connoly added a hit and two runs with Moustouka doubling and driving in three runs.

Monday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 16-8 overall and to 11-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they play host to non-conference foe Ramapo. First pitch with the Roadrunners is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
