Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team stepped out of conference on Wednesday and split a home doubleheader with Ramapo, falling 2-0 and rebounding for a 5-3 win.
Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle for the Knights in game two.
Game 1: Ramapo 2 – Mount Saint Mary 0
The Knights were shutout for the second time this season in Wednesday's opener and held to four singles in the game. The Mount put a runner in scoring position just twice in the game, getting a runner to second base in both the fourth and fifth frames.
Ramapo broke through with the eventual game winning run in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth. Nicole Mahoney led off the fourth with a triple and was chased home on a sacrifice fly and Grace Brennan drove in Shannon Cox with a two out double in the sixth.
The Roadrunners finished with eight hits in the game with half of them going for extra bases. Brennan doubled twice in the game with Ally Spellman and Mahoney ripping triples. Spellman finished the game 4-for-4 with Brennan going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) recorded half of the team's four hits in the opener, going 2-for-3.
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) and
Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.) each singled in the game with
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) and
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) drawing walks.
Junior
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Mount in game one and fell to 7-4 on the season. She worked her 12
th complete game of the season, allowing two runs on eight hits. She struck out 10 and walked two. Christina Brizek earned the win for Ramapo, allowing four hits and fanning three.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 5 – Ramapo 3
After getting blanked in game one, the Knights hung five runs on the board in their first at-bat for all the scoring they would need in game two. After a leadoff out, five straight Knights recorded a hit in the home half of the first, including RBI singles from Connoly and Bennet and a run scoring double from
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.).
Ramapo got on the board in the third inning when Mahoney drove a two-out, two-run home run out to centerfield and got another run closer in the sixth when Carly Vadinsky singled through the right side to chase Brennan home with two outs.
The Roadrunners brought the tying run to the plate in their final at-bat, but Bennett got a groundout to end the threat and her eighth win of the season.
Sommer and Almodovar each recorded a pair of hits in game two, with Almodovar scoring a run. Eiler doubled, scored a run and drove one in. Bennett continued her strong work at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort with a walk, run and RBI.
Bennett moved to 8-3 on the season and won her seventh straight decision with a complete game. She allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five against only one walk. Erin Fitzsimmons fell to 7-3 for Ramapo after allowing three earned runs in just 0.1 innings of work.
Wednesday's split moves Mount Saint Mary to 17-9 overall on the season. The Knights are off until April 18 when they travel to local rival New Paltz. First pitch with the Hawks is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
