Men’s Lacrosse Tripped Up At Vassar

Kugler scores four times

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team returned to action Wednesday evening with a 15-7 road loss at local rival Vassar. Junior Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with four goals for the Knights.

Vassar got off to a quick start on Wednesday, scoring twice in the opening three-and-a-half minutes to open an early 2-0 lead. After Kugler got the Mount on the board, the Brewers ripped off three straight goals to close the opening stanza and hold a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes.

The Brewers' scoring run reached four on a Sam Houston-Read goal in the second stanza before the Knights scored two of the final three goals of the first half. Kugler potted his second goal of the game at the 7:41 mark of the second period and Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) tallied his seventh goal of the season at the 4:16 mark to bring the Knights to within 7-3 at the intermission.

Vassar held Mount Saint Mary to just two shots in the first period on its way to holding a 22-15 edge in attempts at halftime. The Brewers picked up 18 of the 28 groundballs awarded during the first half of play and won nine of the 12 face-offs taken, including all seven in the opening stanza.

The two teams traded the first four goals of the third period, before Vassar ran off four straight markers to close the third period and open the fourth. Freshman Michael Gallucci (Northport, N.Y.) stopped the run with his first career goal at the 9:01 mark of the final period and Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the game with his fifth of the season with just over four minutes left to play.

Kugler paced the Knights with four goals and five points on the night, adding a pair of groundballs. De Meo added a pair of assists to his goal with Earle finishing with a goal and an assist for the Knights. Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Michael Capetola (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) each scooped three groundballs, with Beidl causing a pair of turnovers.

Liam Moriarty was the only Vassar player with more than one goal, scoring four times in the win with Michael Mullen assisting on a pair of tallies. Matthew Lowery led all players with six groundballs and went 10-for-11 on face-offs.

Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal for the Knights, making 13 saves for the third straight game to open the season. A.J. Galletta (Commack, N.Y.) made three stops in nearly seven minutes of work, while Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) made a single stop in his first collegiate action. Vassar had a pair of goalies combine for 12 stops in the contest.

Overall, Vassar finished with a 51-27 advantage in total shots and a 32-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Brewers dominated groundballs 38-19 and face-offs, winning 22 of the 26 taken.
