Baseball Drops Non-Conference Matchup To NJCU

Kozireski records three hits, drives in two

Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team suffered a 21-9 non-conference midweek loss to visiting New Jersey City University on Thursday night. Freshman Matthew Kosireski (Montgomery, N.Y.) finished with three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Knights.

After falling behind by four runs through an inning, the Mount got on the board in the second when Michael Doxey (Highland, N.Y.) doubled home Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) to bring the Knights to within 4-1.

NJCU responded with two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to open an 8-1 lead before the Mount plated a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth and three more in the sixth to get back to within two runs. Kevin Edgar (Southampton, N.Y.) delivered a run with a walk in the fifth and Kosireski drove home two runs with a single in the sixth.

The Gothic Knights tacked on a run in the seventh on a squeeze play and blew the game open with 12 unearned runs in the eighth. NJCU recorded six hits in the inning and took advantage of three Mount Saint Mary errors in the frame. Nick Ruscingno had one of the big blows in the inning with a bases loaded triple to right center.

Mount Saint Mary scored three times in the ninth, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Braden Perry (Brockport, N.Y.) drove in a run with a single in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring in the game.

Kozireski finished with half of the team's hits with Jonathan Callanan (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Francisco Mojica III (New Windsor, N.Y.) each scoring two runs. Doxey doubled for the team's only extra base hit in the game and drove in a run.

NJCU featured 11 players with a hit in the game, led by a 6-for-6 effort from Ruscingno. He scored three times and drove in five runs for the Gothic Knights.

Each team used eight pitchers in the game, with Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) making the start and suffering the loss for the Mount with 3.0 innings pitched. Jake Stewart (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Stephan Sookdeo (Carmel, N.Y.) each worked scoreless innings of relief for the Knights.

Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-14 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a Skyline Conference set with St. Joseph's-L.I. on Monday night at Dutchess Stadium. First pitch with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
