Knights Top Keuka; Score First Win Of The Season

Cordes causes four turnovers, wins two draw controls

Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) and freshman Mikaela Rios (Mastic, N.Y.) each scored twice and junior Morgan Cordes (Sound Beach, N.Y.) caused four turnovers as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team scored its first win of the season with an 8-5 triumph over visiting Keuka on Saturday.
 
Neither team led by more than the final three goal decision on Saturday, with the Knights gaining the largest lead of the day with back-to-back goals from Maggie Pedersen (Glasco, N.Y.) and Christina Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) in the late stages of the second half. The goals came after Kendall Neuberger sliced the Knights' lead to just one goal with 12:29 left in regulation.
 
Mount Saint Mary trailed only briefly on Saturday following back-to-back goals from the Wolves 15 minutes into the contest. Gattoni evened the score with her first of the game and Olivia Green (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored her first goal as a Knight to push the Mount in front 3-2 with 6:20 left before halftime.
 
Rios and Gattoni sandwiched goals around a marker from Keuka's Morgan Bruno late in the first frame to carry a 5-3 lead into the intermission.
 
The Knights outshot the Wolves 16-6 in the first half and went a perfect 8-for-8 in clearing chances. Keuka won five of the nine draw controls contested, while the Knights picked up 11 of the 16 groundballs awarded.
 
Keuka opened the second half scoring with 17:58 left in regulation with a Neuberger tallied and the two teams alternated goals until the Pedersen and Ryan markers closed out the scoring in the game and secured the Knights' first triumph of the season.
 
The Knights featured six different goal scorers in the game, with Green and Pedersen scoring their first goals of the season. Ryan finished with a goal and two assists with Gattoni adding an assist and three groundballs.
 
Cordes recorded four of the team's 16 caused turnovers in the game and added a pair of draw controls and a groundball. Amanda Clemens (Baldwin, N.Y.) finished with a goal, two groundballs, three caused turnovers and three draw controls.
 
Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal with seven saves and added two groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Ally Thayer made nine saves in goal for the Wolves.
 
Keuka was led by two goals from Neuberger and six draw controls and three groundballs from Elizabeth Sherman.
 
Mount Saint Mary closed the day with a 25-13 advantage in shots and a 23-17 edge in groundballs. Each team went 13-for-20 in clearing chances, with Keuka winning eight of the game's 15 draw controls.
 
Saturday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 1-3 overall on the season. The Knights open Skyline Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Sage. Opening Draw at the Albany Pharmacy Athletic Complex is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
