Softball Splits Two In Florida; Sommer Becomes Career Hits Leader

Senior has 146 career hits

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team returned to the diamond on Thursday and split a pair of non-conference games, topping Wooster 9-1 and falling to the College of St. Scholastica 2-0. Senior Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) totaled four hits on the day and moved into first place all-time at the Mount in safeties with her 146th career base hit.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 9 – Wooster 1
In Thursday's opener, the Mount scored in their first at bat again and opened a 3-0 lead before Wooster took a turn at the plate. The Knights' lead grew to 4-0 with a run in the second and added a run in the fourth and two runs each in the sixth and seventh frames.

Sommer led off the game for the Knights with a triple to get the opening rally started and scored the team's first run on a double off the bat of Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.). Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) later drove in Connoly and Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with a single as the Knights took advantage of three hits and three walks in the inning.

Sommer led off the second with a single and scored her second run of the game on a one-out single from Connoly. After Connoly scored in the fourth to push the Mount in front 5-0, the Knights got a two-run single from Emily Lang (Westtown, N.Y.) and closed out the scoring in the game with consecutive RBI singles from Connoly and DePasquale.

Sommer finished a big game for the Knights out of the leadoff spot by going 3-for-5 with a triple to go along with three runs scored. She was one of four Knights to produce multiple hits in the game as the Mount outhit Wooster 17-5.

Connoly rounded out the win 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBI with Amanda Almodovar (Goshen, N.Y.), DePasquale and Lang each finishing with a pair of hits. Depasquale scored twice and drove in a run.

Connoly picked up her second win of the season in the circle and evened her record at 2-2 with her fourth complete game of the campaign. She allowed one run, lowering her season earned run average to 1.25, and struck out 10 batters.

Game 2: St. Scholastica 2 – Mount Saint Mary 1
For the first time this season, the Mount failed to score a run in its first at bat against the Saints. The only runs in the game came in the fifth inning when St. Scholastica's Dakota Underwood shot a two-out single through the left side to break the scoreless tie and produce the eventual game winning runs.

The Knights finished the game with five singles, including one each from the first four batters in the lineup. Sommer, Almodovar, Connoly, DePasquale and Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) all finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate.

Bridget Bennett (Gardiner, N.Y.) suffered her third loss of the season in the circle after working 5.0 solid innings for the Mount. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three in the outing.  Bianca Marletta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came on to work the five two frames and struck out one batter.

At 3-5 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary closes out its southern trip on Friday with contests against Springfield (9:00 a.m.) and Transylvania (11:15 a.m.).
