Gattoni Becomes Career Goal Leader In Loss To Marywood

Senior is now just three away from tying points records

Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) set the career goals record at Mount Saint Mary and totaled five points on Wednesday as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Marywood, 19-5. Gattoni holds the goal record with 173 following Wednesday's output and is now just three points away from tying the all-time points mark of 210.

The record breaking goal came at the 10:34 mark of the first half when Gattoni snapped a four goal run for the Pacers. The 171st marker of her career moved her into sole possession of the record for the Knights, moving past Kaileen Spadaro.

Gattoni's first half marker would be the only tally for the Knights prior to halftime, as Marywood carried a 7-1 lead into the intermission. The Pacers held a 19-5 advantage in shots at the break, a 12-8 edge in groundballs and won six of the nine draw controls contested.

Mount Saint Mary scored back-to-back goals coming out of the break to slice its disadvantage to 7-3 on tallies from Kayla Gilligan (Amityville, N.Y.) and Gattoni, but saw Marywood rip off nine of the next 10 goals to open a 16-4 lead. Savanna Caso (Highland, N.Y.) scored her first career goal to break up the run and Gattoni scored her third of the game with just under 12 minutes left to close out the scoring for the Mount.

Gattoni finished the evening with three goals and a pair of assists to lead the Mount with five points. Caso and Gilligan scored the other goals for the Knights, with Gattoni and Chelsea Henke (Pawling, N.Y.) winning a pair of draw controls. Maggie Pedersen (Glasco, N.Y.) rounded out the night with three groundballs, a draw control and a caused turnover.

Marywood was led by four goals each from Gwyneth Gleason and Ashley Valway, with Gleason leading all players with six points. Natalie Burke led the Pacers with five draw controls and added two groundballs, two goals and a pair of assists.

Amanda Picillo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made a career-high 14 saves in her season debut and Carolyn Smith (Massapequa, N.Y.) made a single save in her first collegiate action. Lauren Smith picked up the win for Marywood with six stops for the Pacers.

Overall, Marywood finished with the advantage in shots 38-14, groundballs 21-14 and draw controls 18-8. Both teams went 12-for-18 in clearing chances and the Pacers finished 2-for-3 in free-position chances.

At 0-1 on the season, Mount Saint Mry returns to action on March 8 when it plays host to Ramapo. Opening draw at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
