Mount Saint Mary Suffers Setback At Old Westbury

Hellpap nets 10 points in loss

Old Westbury, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team saw its four game winning streak come to an end Tuesday night following a 65-44 road loss at Skyline Conference rival Old Westbury. Freshman Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, N.J.) was the lone Knight to score in double-figures, finishing the night with 10 points.
 
Mount Saint Mary led by as many as three points twice in the early going on Tuesday, but saw the Panthers put together a 15-3 run to close the first quarter to take the lead for good in the game. The Mount was held to just one field goal over the final 6:11 of the opening stanza, a Janae Graham (Orange, Conn.) three-pointer, with 3:09 left in the period.
 
Old Westbury moved in front by double-figures 31 seconds into the second quarter on a Monique Joseph bucket and held the Mount to a single field goal over the first nearly three minutes of the frame. The Panthers' lead ballooned to 35-15 on a Bridgid Mitchell bucket with 5:45 left before halftime and Old Westbury took a 41-24 lead into the intermission after shooting nearly 53-percent in the second period.
 
Mount Saint Mary went 8-for-23 from the floor over the first 20 minutes and turned the ball over 23 times prior to halftime. Old Westbury shot 45.7-percent as a team and was led by 11 first half points from Ruth Vargas.
 
Old Westbury maintained a double-figure lead throughout the second half and gained a game-high 60-34 advantage on a Davida Warren layup with 7:10 left in regulation. The Knights would get to within 15 points twice in the third period, but could not climb any closer the rest of the way.
 
The Knights shot a season worst 30.8-percent from the field in the game and were outscored in the paint 38-18. The Mount turned the ball over a season-high 35 times, allowing 31 points off of turnovers on Tuesday.
 
Hellpap scored all of her team-high 10 points before halftime and finished the game 3-for-10 from the floor with a three-point field goal. Graham matched her season-high with eight points for the Knights and added a team-high three steals.
 
Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and Maite Gritsko (Milford, Conn.) each contributed seven points, while Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) hauled in a team-high eight rebounds to go along with an assist and a steal.
 
Old Westbury featured four players in double-figures, led by 17 points from Vargas. Charlotte Renker added 13 points and eight rebounds, with Joseph and Tori Belling chipping in with 11 and 10 points. Jasmine Robinson rounded out the night with seven points, four assists and seven steals.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 16-5 overall on the season and to 12-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off with the Rams.
