Baseball Battles Past Albertus Magnus, 4-3

Terzulli drives in game winner in eighth inning

Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team scored its first win of the season with a 4-3 triumph over Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Nicholas Terzulli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in the game winning run in the eighth and senior Stephan Sookdeo (Carmel, N.Y.) picked up the win in relief for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary never trailed in the game and held leads of 1-0 and 3-1 before taking the final one run advantage in the eighth. The Knights got on the board first in the third inning when a two out single from Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) drove home Christopher Introcaso (Newburgh, N.Y.) with the game's first run.

After the Falcons tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth, the Mount responded with two tallies in the home half of the inning to move back in front 3-1. John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) and Introcaso worked walks to lead off the inning and were moved over on a groundout, before Sanatana crossed on a wild pitch and Introcaso was chased home on a sacrifice fly from Alexander Nova (Miami, Fla.).

Albertus Magnus rallied again with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to even the score at 3-3. The Falcons plated an unearned run in the seventh and then evened the score following a one out triple up the right center field gap off the bat of Andrew Scully.

With the score tied 3-3 in the eighth, the Mount got a leadoff triple from Matthew Kozireski (Montgomery, N.Y.) who later scored on a pinch hit sacrifice fly off the bat of Terzulli. It was Kozireski's first run scored of the season and the first RBI of the campaign for Terzulli.

Albertus Magnus got two runners on with one out in the ninth, but Ryan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to secure his first save of the season.

Peter Knights (White Plains, N.Y.) finished the day 2-for-4 with a double for the Mount with Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.), Santana, Pepe and Kozireski each recording safeties. Santana scored a pair of runs for the Knights was one of three players to steal a base in the game.

Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) worked 6.0 strong innings in the start on Saturday, allowing just one unearned run on three hits to go along with four strikeouts. He lowered her season earned run average to 1.23 following his second appearance of the season. Sookdeo picked up the win with 0.2 innings of work with Hayes collecting the save with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 1-3 overall on the season. The Knights are right back on the field Sunday afternoon when they play host to Baruch. First pitch at Dutchess Stadium is set for 12:00 p.m.
