Cortland, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team saw its season come to an end on Saturday following a 3-0 loss in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at #15 Cortland. Freshman goalkeeper
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) finished the game with seven saves.
Mount Saint Mary got off two attempts inside the first 90 seconds of the contest and had two corner kicks over that stretch, but could not find the back of the net.
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) and
Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) got off the early shots for the Knights.
Cortland broke through with the eventual game winning goal in the 19
th minute when Migell Ormsby scored his first of two goals in the game. He headed in a corner kick started by Miguel Tunas at the 9:24 mark of the contest for an early 1-0 lead.
The lead for the Red Dragons doubled just over nine minutes later when Cortland closed out the scoring in the opening period. Tunas started a free-kick that was headed in by Matt Hellerman at 18:26 to give Cortland a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Cortland finished the opening period with a 12-8 advantage in shots, while the Knights took eight corner kicks in the opening period. Rapp and Cortland keeper, Connor Young, each made three first half stops.
The game remained 2-0 until the late stages of regulation when Ormsby finished off his second of the game and 11
th of the season in the 78
th minute. He took a shot that was deflected by a defender and in at 77:48.
Mount Saint Mary's best chance of the game came when Fuge chipped a ball toward an open net in the 83
rd minute, but the shot was turned aside by a Cortland defender to keep the Knights off the board.
Rapp finished one save short of matching his career-high with seven. He finishes his rookie campaign with a 0.75 goals against average and .836 save percentage. He made 46 saves for the Knights and posted seven shutouts in 2017. Young rounded out the game with three stops.
Cortland finished the contest with a 21-16 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Dolan led the Mount with seven shots, with freshman
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) recording four attempts for the Mount. Mount Saint Mary doubled up Cortland in corner kicks, 10-5.
Saturday's loss ends the Mount's season at 12-8-0.
